New service: Liver cancer treatment now available at LGH

Lahore General Hospital has become the first government hospital in the country that offers liver cancer treatment facilities, Prof Anjum Habib Vohra said on Sunday.

He was speaking at a ceremony held in connection with the launch of liver cancer treatment at the LGH’s Interventional Neuro-Radiology Department.

Vohra, the principal of the Post Graduate Medical Institute, said so far liver cancer treatment facilities had only been available in the country at some private hospitals. He said the credit for the launch of the new service at LGH should go to Senior Radiologist Dr Muhammad Farooq.

He said Dr Farooq had started treatment of liver cancer patients at the Neuro-Radiology Department using the transcatheter arterial chemoembolization method (TACE is a minimally invasive procedure performed in interventional radiology to restrict a tumor’s blood supply).

Prof Vohra said a Stroke Centre had also been established at the hospital.

He said if the pace of adoption of modern technology in the public health sector was maintained the day was not far away when people from other countries would visit Pakistan to attend to their medical needs.

Senior Radiologist Dr Farooq said timely diagnosis was the key to successful treatment of liver cancer. He said hepatitis patients were at a higher risk of contracting liver cancer.
