Ranaut, who was recently in Kolkata to promote the film, which is slated to release on May 22, talked about what its storyline entails. “This is a love story on contemporary marriage. I don’t think such stories are made. The humour in the movie is subtle and relatable,” said the National Award-winning actor.
Madhavan was last seen in the film Jodi Breakers in 2012. He previously said it was a conscious decision to take a break as he wanted time to rediscover himself. “I took a break so that I can entertain my audience properly. I think I took my audience for granted and wasn’t able to justify myself,” he said.
Tanu Weds Manu Returns sees Ranaut playing the double role of Tanu and Kusum, the latter being a tomboy. To depict the character, she had to go rustic and speak Haryanvi. She shared that shooting for the sequel was ‘stressful’ due to the challenge involved in portraying a dual role.
Of his criteria for role selection, Madhavan said he believes in putting himself in the audience’s shoes before taking up a project and doesn’t accept an offer for the sake of money. “Whether or not I want to see the film in the theatre is the only mantra I have,” he noted.
Madhavan added that he likes to opt for scripts that are ahead of the young generation in terms of intelligence. “The approach is that intelligence of the stories should supersede that of the younger generation, which already knows a lot about everything,” stated the actor of 3 Idiots fame.
Kangana also spoke about the prevailing disparity in money that male and female actors receive in Bollywood. She said she will “make sure” someday that this divide is bridged. “A few people are trying like me. It’s still a very, very male-dominated industry and hopefully, at some point, it will be equal and I’m going to make sure that happens,” she shared.
Directed by Anand L Rai, the film also features Deepak Dobriyal, Jimmy Shergill, Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub and Dhanush.
