Rafique Rajwana appointed Punjab governor

Last govenor Sarwar resigned on January 29 after blaming PML-N government of bad governance

ISLAMABAD: Senator Rafique Rajwana on Thursday was appointed Governor Punjab by President Mamnoon Hussain, Express News reported. 

Following his appointment, Rajwana said in a statement that he will make the utmost effort to serve the people of his province.

He also assured Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif that he will meet the expectations of the higher leadership of the country

The position became vacant after Chaudhry Sarwar resigned from the post on January 29 after blaming the PML-N government of bad governance. He then joined Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf.

Sarwar had earlier censured the Foreign Office for US President Barack Obama visiting India and not Pakistan and termed it a “failure” on part of the country’s foreign policy.

Although sources had revealed that the premier had decided to remove Sarwar owing to multiple reasons, it was particularly the statement pertaining to Obama that the final decision was made.

As the position remained vacant, several candidates were considered for the position which was filled today by Senator Rajwana.

Hailing from southern Punjab, Rajwana has been active in the politics of the region. He has also been closely associated with Pakistan Muslim League - Nawaz throughout his political career.
