LAHORE: Seven schools including two in Lahore have registered for a World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) programme that aims to raise awareness about environmental issues among young people.

WWF Pakistan intends to get 10 schools, public and private, to register in the first year of its Green School Certification programme, launched to celebrate 40 years of WWF activities in the country.

Beaconhouse, Garden Town, and the American School of International Academics are among the seven schools that have already registered.

Three schools in Islamabad and two in Karachi have also registered.

The programme aims to give schoolchildren an insight into regional and global environmental challenges and a chance to serve their communities, according to Mariam Aurangzeb, head of corporate relations at WWF Pakistan.

Schools completing one year in the programme will get WWF accreditation as a ‘Green School’.

Students from the participating schools can take part in several activities, including a nationwide spelling bee; tours to four major cities; an ‘eco-internship’ programme; conservation campaigns; documentary screenings; wildlife photography workshops; visits to WWF offices; and in shows on Annual Environment Day.
