Sir Paul McCartney compares Kanye West to John Lennon

The artist's revelation comes as a shock to Beatles fans

The music of The Beatles continues to speak to generations over half a century after its release, like it was written this morning. So it comes as a great shock to hear Sir Paul McCartney declare that working with Kanye West reminds him of working writing with the late John Lennon.

Understandably, working with a Beatle is possibly going to go down as a highlight of Kanye’s glittering career but according to Sir Paul McCartney himself, working with Kanye may have been one of his as well.

McCartney spent two afternoons penning tracks with Kanye West for the rapper’s pending seventh album So Help Me God. According to Paul, the process reminded him of the one he used when working with his late Beatles bandmate.

In an interview with The Sun, McCartney said, "When I wrote with John, he would sit down with a guitar. I would sit down. We'd ping-pong till we had a song. It was like that."

Although, he admitted being initially reluctant to work with the rapper, whose reputation is sensationally divisive. “My first thought was, ‘Woah, what am I going to get into here?’

He added, “He is amazingly talented but controversial and can make eccentric moves. I realised if it didn’t work out we’d just say so and shake hands and leave.”

The Sun reported that McCartney forced Kanye West to agree that if the Beatles' singer was not entirely happy with the way things were working out between them, all the efforts would be scrapped.

Fortunately for both, the sessions turned out to be quite productive. “We sat around and talked an awful lot just to break the ice. One of the stories I told him was about how I happened to have written ‘Let It Be. My mum came to me in a dream when she’d died years previously. I was in a bit of a state — it was the Sixties and I was overdoing it," Paul McCartney told The Sun.
