LAHORE: The Punjab University’s College of Arts and Design put on display on Thursday the theses of its students of master’s programmes encompassing various social issues.
The event showcases the work of students from Graphic Design, Sculpture, Print Making, Fine Arts and Visual Arts Departments.
The works of Graphic Design students focuses on branding products and creating social awareness.
Salman Raza, one of the students, said his work focused on the negative impact of the excessive use of social media. He said it targeted the people of 11-18 age group who according to him were the most frequent users of the social media.
He said he had designed various stickers that could be placed on objects of daily use such as teacups and plates along with posters having three-dimensional elements.
Samina Rehman from the Visual Arts Department said her work focused on jharokas in the Mughal architecture.
“A jharoka has always served as a place for women to view the outside world without being seen.” Her work shows mirrors in front of jharokas with images of college buildings and various alphabets painted on them.
Kalsoom Javed from the Fine Arts Department said her work was about an experience that all women went through in their life – the marriage proposal. She said often women were “displayed” as decorative objects for those looking for a perfect bride.
“The exercise often causes a woman to go through serious mental strain affecting her health.” Her work focuses on various aspects of the process. A plain, white canvas has a measuring tape stretched across it, while another painting shows a close up shot of a woman’s hair stuck in a roller. “This is a comment on the various pointless insecurities women often get caught in.”
Shahid Anjum’s work, titled The Self Contradictory Self is also part of the display that will conclude on Friday (today).
