KARACHI:

The Sindh High Court (SHC) issued contempt notices to the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) land officials for allegedly violating a restraining order against the demolition of shops to construct a bridge under the Malir City Project.

A two-judge bench, headed by Justice Hasan Azhar Rizvi, directed them to submit their replies by May 4. A group of the shopkeepers took the KMC's land department authorities to the court over demolition of their shops. They said that the high court had restrained the land officials from demolishing more shops to pave the way for the bridge project on April 29, 2014. The KMC staff, however, reached the area with heavy machinery, ready to tear down their shops.

The court was pleaded to initiate contempt proceedings against the KMC officials for willfully defying the court's 2014 restraining order.
