ISLAMABAD: Former CJP Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry’s attempt to unseat Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) MNAs proves that he was always part of Premier Nawaz Sharif’s team, PTI Information Secretary Shireen Mazari said on Sunday.

Her rejoinder was the result of Chaudhry’s three-page letter to National Assembly Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq wherein he said the PTI’s lawmakers had “lost any constitutional entitlement to a seat in the House” because “not only did they publicly repudiate their seats but actually turned in their resignations in writing”.

The PTI has repeatedly accused Chaudhry of playing a role in the alleged rigging in the 2013 general elections, and his letter seems to have brought about a barrage of criticism against him anew.

In an attempt to prove that the former chief justice of Pakistan favoured the Sharif brothers, Mazari said in a statement that “the Supreme Court had issued a stay order before the 2013 polls that ensured Shahbaz would continue to be the chief minister”.

She wondered why the same CJP who had actively pursued corruption cases against political leaders, taken up the NRO case and castigated a number of NAB chiefs for not being active enough, “never pursued a single NAB case against the Sharifs”.

About the 2013 polls, the statement said: “[Chaudhry] especially chose to address the returning officers, which was unprecedented.”

Mazari claimed that the former CJP took suo motu notices on many “trivial” issues, but “refused investigate rigging in four constituencies”.

S.R.H. Hashmi | 9 years ago | Reply Even if the former CJP had been a member of Team Nawaz, as claimed by PTI, the fact still remains that whatever he said in his letter to the Assembly Speaker is true. It is a fact that the PTI members had submitted their resignations from the National Assembly, and they even offered to come en bloc to the Assembly to confirm their resignations and suggested to the Speaker that he could confirm resignations from the members in the presence of others. However, the Speaker wanted the PTI members to come and confirm the resignations individually and in privacy. PTI rejected this move because it feared that there may be an attempt to buy them out if they appeared individually and in privacy. It was a funny situation where the PTI heads did not trust their own members. At the same time, the Speaker should have accepted the resignations because he could verify their signatures also during their presence in the house en bloc when no PTI member claimed that he was forced to sign the resignation, proving beyond doubt that the resignations were voluntary. There is also a rule which permits the house to cancel the membership of any member who remains absent from the assembly for a continuous period of forty days without good cause. There were also insulting remarks from Imran Khan, declaring the National Assembly to be a fake institution, because of having come into existence through rigged elections. This gives clear indication of PTI's intention to dissociate itself from the National Assembly. As a justification for re-entry in the Assembly, Imran Khan said that he believed the Assembly members wanted PTI in. Now, if he considered the Assembly to be fake and improper, why did he have to honour the wishes of its members? All these factors clearly show that there was absolutely no reason for the Speaker not to accept PTI members' resignations. It is strange that in our country almost all institutions are run almost as a joke, in total disregard of rules, regulations and laid down procedures and then they have the cheek to complain that people do not give them due respect.
