Noted peace and environmental activist Fauzia Minallah awarded Ron Kovic Peace Award for 2010 for Let Them Bloom.
Noted peace and environmental activist Fauzia Minallah was awarded the Ron Kovic Peace Award for 2010 for her film Let Them Bloom.
The award was announced at My Hero Film Festival at the USC School of Cinematic Arts in Los Angeles. Fauzia was unable to attend the ceremony due to visa issues but her acceptance speech was screened while the Executive Director of the Artmile Mural Project, USA, Joanne Twafilis received the award on her behalf.
The film Let Them Bloom tells the story of a peace mural created by children from a squatter settlement in Islamabad, according to a press release. The children’s artwork offers a compelling call for peace amidst an environment of violence. Ron Kovic selected this film for its “inspirational message of peace, dignity, reconciliation and forgiveness.”
An artist, author, political cartoonist and peace activist, Fauzia founded the Funkor Child Art Centre in Islamabad in 2001 to promote children’s art and improve literacy in katchi abadis (slum areas) of the federal capital.
