LAHORE:

Justice Anwaarul Haq of the Lahore High Court on Friday sought reply from the Punjab government regarding a petition wherein the detention order of Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi had been challenged.

Lakhvi, the leader of Jamatud Dawa, had previously been accused of masterminding the 2008 Mumbai attacks.

Lakhvi’s counsel submitted that on March 26 the LHC had directed the home department to deliberate upon the request against his detention. He contended that the department had turned down the request, which action was illegal.

He said that furthermore the department did not have the authority to detain a person for a fourth time without presenting him before the LHC review board. He argued that under the law the government was bound to produce the petitioner before review board, the only forum to decide the detention matter.
