DI KHAN:

A policeman escorting polio vaccinators was wounded after gunmen shot him in Kulachi tehsil of DI Khan district on Thursday, in the latest attack on security personnel guarding health workers.

According to officials, the policeman came under attack in Gura Muhabat area in the early afternoon when unidentified gunmen riding a motorbike opened fire at the officer who was returning to the check post after his duty. As a result, police officer Haq Nawaz suffered minor injuries.

Shortly after the attack, Nawaz was shifted to District Headquarters and Teaching Hospital DI Khan where he received medical treatment.

A senior police official said that a case against the attackers has been registered and an investigation is under way.

Attempts to stamp out the debilitating disease have been badly hit by opposition from militants and attacks on immunisation teams that have claimed several lives.
