NOWSHERA: Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl activists and members of traders’ unions in Nowshera observed a complete shutter-down strike on Saturday over the murder of religious scholar Maulana Amir Hamza.

On Friday night, Amir Hamza, an administrator of Nowshera’s famous Taqwa Masjid and a senior member of the Tableeghi Jamaat, was gunned down by unidentified assailants near his house.

His funeral prayers were offered in Nowshera Cantt at 11am on Saturday and were attended by members of the Tableeghi Jamaat, ulema, politicians and residents.

After the funeral, traders’ unions in Nowshera Cantt observed a shutter-down strike to raise their voice against the brutal murder of the Tableeghi Jamaat member.  A large number of shops and businesses in the area remained closed. They urged the relevant authorities to find the culprits and take them to task immediately.

Later, the unions took out a rally from Taqwa Masjid along with JUI-F activists. Protesters demanded the government to conduct a thorough investigation into the murder and arrest the culprits without further delay.  Moreover, they urged the government to increase security for religious scholars.
