Rangers file case against MQM chief Altaf Hussain

Police says case has been registered under Anti-Terrorism Act for issuing threats to Rangers

KARACHI: The Rangers filed a case on Tuesday against Muttahida Qaumi Movement chief Altaf Hussain for allegedly threatening them.

A case has been registered in the Civil Lines police station on the request of Rangers spokesperson Colonel Tahir Mehmood.

The application has been filed against the MQM chief for threatening the Rangers spokesperson and other personnel following a pre-dawn raid on the MQM headquarters, Nine-Zero last week.

In the application the Rangers spokesperson upheld the MQM chief in an interview with Geo TV following the raid threatened Rangers personnel involved in the operation.

The MQM chief had said, “The have-beens of today in the paramilitary force will become the had-beens.”

According to police, the case has been registered under Anti-Terrorism Act with sections pertaining to issuing threats to law enforcement agencies.

“The FIR was registered under Section 506 of Pakistan Penal Code, that calls for punishment for criminal intimidation as well as Section 7 of the Anti-Terrorism Act (ATA), 1997 that calls for punishment for terrorist acts," duty officer at Civil Lines police station said.

In a targeted operation in the wee hours of March 11, Rangers carried out a raid at Nine-Zero, with the party claiming that several leaders had been arrested.

Reacting to news of the case being registered, MQM's Rabita Committee in a press release said that their legal and constitutional experts are examining the case and will draft a legal framework accordingly.

“The accusations pinned on the MQM chief are not true,” the statement said.

“In the past, cases were also registered against the MQM chief but we faced them,” it added.

Further, MQM leader Kishwar Zehra while speaking to The Express Tribune said, “The case registered by law enforcement agencies is a conspiracy against party chief Altaf Hussain.”

Hashmi | 9 years ago | Reply Surely an active service Colonel is supposed to display a bit more courage than getting panicky over a presumed 'death threat' from a person thousands of mile away, who has been denied, and does not presently possess a Pakistani passport and whose return to Pakistan has been regularly blocked by the Pakistani authorities. Of course, taking no chances, the cautious official rushed to a police station to register an FIR against Altaf Hussain. The 'development' comes in the immediate aftermath of a raid on Nine-Zero during which allegations were made by a Rangers senior official that weapons recovered from the premises included those from stolen NATO containers. Interestingly, the allegation was rebutted by NATO/ISAF officials earlier on, as also now, with the additional claim by them that they never used Pakistani land route for sending arms and ammunition to Afghanistan. Looks like the affair is becoming too personal. Karachi

PAT in particular is solely responsible for murder of 14 people in model town. The people were instigated to commit violence and attack law enforcement. In any part of the world including US (See Ferguson incident), when you attack police you get shot period. Further Qadri, is responsible for damage to public institutions and attack on PTV. He is a culprit, a sick person, a murdere and must be charged. Imran is also culprit, for loss of billions to nation because of his phony agitation, responsible for 8 deaths in Multan stampede, 2 more killed in Faisalabad because of his violent speeches. Imran will start losing many cases in courts and many many fines will come his way. This all is true and I stand with these words.

Here, after breathing the fresh air and imbibing of the decent humanity all around (among other things) I have come to realize that I was a racist in Karachi. The intention is of course that they want to replace MQM with someone else. A puppet like Imran Khan. I believe in 2013 elections were rigged in favor of IK and therefore he got 10,000 votes on average. My issue is let the people decide and through living in Karachi I very well know that no one else can win there. Because I know the mindset. People connect only to MQM. They did a great job when local government there. Many of the families have members, their representative live among the people, they listen to people, they solve their problems and they give respect to Karachites. We have absolutely no connection with PTI - their leaders are on FB and twitter with no people power. MQM on the other hand is visible I am sure over the years it has some corruption but when you are not going to give them their due, disrespect them then elements will develop.
