Advocate Ghulamullah Chang has been elected as the president while advocate Mumtaz Alam Laghari was elected vice president of the Sindh High Court Bar Association (SHCBA), Hyderabad chapter, in the bar elections held on Saturday in Hyderabad.


Advocate Ayaz Tunio was elected unopposed as general secretary for a second term. He was earlier elected on the same seat in 2012.


A total of 641 lawyers out of 807 registered members cast their votes in the polls of SHCBA, whose jurisdiction covers 14 districts of Hyderabad, Mirpurkhas and Nawabshah divisions. The Hyderabad bench is the largest of the three Sindh High Court benches, including two in Sukkur and Larkana. Its jurisdiction is even larger than the principal seat in Karachi in terms of the number of districts covered by the bench.


In a neck-to-neck contest, Chang bagged 321 out of the 631 votes while his opponent advocate Jagdish R Mulani was got 310 votes, according to election committee's chairman advocate Irfan Kalhoro.


Tariq Ahmed Shah was elected as the library secretary, Ishrat Ali Lohar as the joint secretary and Taj Muhammad Keerio as the treasurer.


Seven lawyers were also elected as part of the members managing committee.
