An image was posted recently on a social media page, ‘Karachi Food Diaries’ to report the mistreatment of domestic help in the city.

The posted image claimed to show a family enjoying a meal at a restaurant as their domestic help stood on the side and took care of the child.

The post was then also shared on Twitter and criticized the family for allegedly not feeding the two girls with the child. The post was then retweeted over 1000 times.

Although the image portrays the domestic help just walking around with the child, there was much debate around whether the maids had already eaten and were just walking around with the restless child.

Those who shared the post were also caught up in the debate and were criticised for sharing the image without the family’s permission.

Doha based Al Jazeera also picked up on the incident and pointed out that similar treatment of domestic help was common across South Asia and in Gulf countries.

I think it was a responsible act to post the picture / video on the net…..this is the only way to create an awareness and possibly, just possibly shame the shameless.Recommend

I don’t know what is this fuss about. Many of those furious at this are also those who contribute less to the society except “discussing, disrupting and dissenting”.Recommend

pictures like these are very misleading to the public.Maybe they are treated well off by the family in question.who are we to judge. But action should be taken against the person who actually took the picture without the family knowledge .Recommend

People making the “right to privacy argument” are just super-entitled.

You should not expect privacy in a public place like a restaurant. If you don’t want people to name or shame you, don’t do such shame-able acts.

We should be critical of such cruel behaviour towards domestic help so that people feel pressured to treat their domestic help better.

I would request everyone here to reconsider what they pay to those who perform domestic tasks for them. You might not be cruel in the most literal sense (eating while someone takes care of your child while standing at a distance), but if you pay your “servants” minimal amounts, you are perpetuating slave culture since you are not letting them and their families break free from the cycle of poverty.

    Thank you.Recommend

Maybe baby was crying and she was soothing him.And if she took a seat he would have started crying. Too cheap. It doesn’t show mistreatment but we do have this mistreatment issue in our society. If someone is serious abt it do something useful, not these goof ups.

@Proletariat, in some countries you can be sued for photogrphing you in public without your permission.Recommend
