ISLAMABAD:

National Defence University (NDU), National University of Modern Languages (NUML) and National University of Science and Technology (NUST) on Friday won the second round of the 17th annual all Pakistan inter-university declamation contest.

The winners of this round will now compete at the national level for the prestigious Allama Iqbal Shield.

A total of 40 students from 14 regional universities took part in the competition on Thursday, which was hosted by the International Islamic University Islamabad. NDU clinched the first position while NUML picked the second and third positions in the English category. In Urdu version, NUST grabbed the first two positions, and NUML the third.

The jury comprised Dr Sibghatullah Khan of the Islamabad College for Boys F-11/1, NUST Director Publications Muhammad Ilyas Chishti, IIUI English department faculty member Dr Fozia Janjua and Dr Saira Batool from the IIUI Urdu department.  At the final round, 30 finalists from across the country would compete for the award in the two categories at the Higher Education Commission.

IIUI Acting President Dr Mohammad Bashir Khan, who presided over the contest along with HEC Deputy Director Academics Dr Tahir Ali Shah, said declamation contests were vital for building confidence and communication skills in students.

Shah said the annual contest debuted in 1994 with the help of the then Ministry of Education.
