HEC awards 46 ‘best university teachers’

The performance is evaluated on the basis of academic work performance, research work performance and creative work.

ISLAMABAD: Higher Education Commission (HEC) on Wednesday granted the “Best University Teacher Award” for 2009 to 46 faculty members of public sector universities in recognition of their services. The award included a Certificate of Merit and a cash prize of Rs100,000.

HEC selected the teachers out of 94 nominations received from 47 public sector universities and degree awarding institutions for the year 2009.

“Recognition is a driving force in achieving further excellence,” said MNA and Member Standing Committee on Education Begum Nuzhat Sadiq, who was the chief guest at the ceremony. She appreciated HEC for launching a programme to recognise the efforts of teachers.

Chairperson HEC Dr Javaid Laghari said faculty is the heart of any university and reputation of the institution depends on their performance. “Universities are supposed to build communities and economies, which is impossible without proactive contribution of teachers,” he said. He urged teachers to ensure that the quality of teaching and research improves constantly. Dr Laghari announced that teachers of private universities will also be included for this prestigious award from the next year.

HEC has developed criteria for conferment of Best University Teacher Award. The performance of teachers is evaluated on the basis of academic work performance (with 65 per cent weightage), research work performance (24 per cent) and creative work (11 per cent).

Till date, HEC has granted 202 awards under Phase II of the scheme, which was approved at a cost of Rs29,500 million in May 2004. Under the scheme a total of 250 awards were to be conferred over a period of five years.
