Hamza Ali Abbasi reveals why he snubbed the Emmys

Burka Avenger was nominated in the 'Animations' category

Taking to his Facebook account, Hamza Ali Abbasi announced on Friday his reason for boycotting the Emmy Awards for Burqa Avenger.

"There is a reason why I boycotted the Emmy Awards for Burqa Avenger," he said in his post adding that "the West uses such platforms, meant for celebrating excellence, to advance their political agendas."

He used the example of the Iranian journalist who was given a Human Rights Award for campaigning against the law in Iran which makes it compulsory for women to wear the hijab.

"Another glorious example of western hypocrisy: The Human Rights award has been given to an Iranian journalist who is campaigning against Hijab. Western hypocrisy has reached a new low," he said about the award.

Burka Avenger was nominated in the Emmy Kids Awards in the category of Animations.

The story revolves around an animated female superhero Jiya who fights for justice, peace and education for all. Abbasi gives his voice to Baba Bandook in the story.

Despite Hamza Ali Abbasi's decision to not attend the award ceremony, fans of the animated story took to social media to laud the efforts of its creators.

Misha | 9 years ago | Reply Does this guy even have a brain? Iranian women don't want to wear the hijab. If someone is campaigning for their right to dress as they please that is most definitely to be lauded. I wonder how people actually listen to him. Tsk tsk.
