ISLAMABAD : Representatives of provincial governments submitted dates for local body elections to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) in a meeting on Friday.

According to the information submitted, Punjab will be ready for local body polls by November 2015, Sindh by March 2016 and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) by May 2015. The ECP will submit a response to the Supreme Court on February 12 regarding schedules of local body elections. On January 8, the court had directed ECP and the provinces to come up with designated dates for the polls in the next hearing.

Speaking to media persons after the meeting, Acting Secretary of the ECP Sher Afghan said that local body elections can be held in Punjab by November this year. The elections, however, can only take place once Punjab government handovers data regarding delimitation of certain districts to the ECP.

According to the representative from Sindh, the province will gear up for local body polls by March 2016. The Sindh government is yet to amend laws relating to local government polls as proposed by the ECP.

The representative from KP told members of the meeting that the province will be ready for polls by May this year.

Representatives of cantonments said they have sent an ordinance regarding local body polls to the law ministry are waiting for a response.

Government ready to hold local government polls: Rashid

Information Minister Pervaiz Rashid has said that the government will hold local government elections as soon as the delimitation process of constituencies is completed.

The PML-N was ready to hold the polls in Punjab but the process was marred with legal complications, he added.

“Now the legal complications have been eliminated but the ECP has to complete the delimitation process of constituencies. We will hold the polls as soon as this matter is resolved,” Rashid said.

Under the Constitution, it is CM of province who advice's the provincial governor, for the LB elections date announcement. Provincial EC does the rest, as a public servant body. ECP is duty bound to carry out the exercise of election. It should be ready at a notice of 30 days from CM coordinated call.It is incompetency of provincial assemblies that CM and public service bodies are preventing the establishment of truly democratic Pakistan. Shame on all those who are under oath to obey the constitution!

@Common Pakistani: PTI has said numerous times they are ready to hold elections. Its ECP that determines dates, not provinces. And ECP is also corrupt and incompetent to the core.

LG elections are in the constitution, but our 'democrats' and state officials cite the constitution only when it suits them.
