According to the party, the deceased, Sohail Ahmed, was the in-charge of Society sector unit 64. He was allegedly picked up by law enforcement agencies on December 15 from the area.
Hearing the news of his death, members of the Rabita Committee started arriving at the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, while markets in many areas of the city, including PECHS, Bahudarabad and Tariq Road, started shutting down.
Condemning the death, MQM chief Altaf Hussain said that 36 workers have become victims of extra judicial killings.
“The MQM is being targeted in the name of a targeted operation,” the party chief alleged.
Further, he claimed some agencies were carrying out actions against the party on the orders of the government.
‘Failure of provincial, federal government’
MQM leader Khawaja Izharul Hassan while announcing the day of mourning said Ahmed was shot twice, and was associated with the party for the last 26 years.
“According to the post-mortem report, he was shot twice; one bullet on the head and another on the neck,” he said.
He termed the killing a failure of both the provincial and federal government, adding that the MQM is being politically victimised.
"Over 35 of our workers have been killed extra-judicially in the current democratic regime.”
He appealed the army chief, DG Rangers and DG ISI to take notice of the extra-judicial, and 'custodial' killings of MQM workers.
Nisar takes notice of worker's killing
Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar took notice of the killing of MQM worker, and sought report from DG Rangers Sindh and IG Sindh about the incident, Radio Pakistan reported.
He condoled with the MQM over the incident, assuring that no action beyond limit of law will be allowed.
Five militants killed
Separately, five militants linked to a banned outfit were killed during a police encounter in Nawaz Goth, Karachi.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Malir Rao Anwar confirmed the suspects killed belonged to a banned outfit.
Qaim Ali Shah responsible for Sohail Ahmed’s killing
In charge Rabita Committee Qamar Mansoor in a press conference on Wednesday night said that since the Sindh Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah also holds the portfolio province’s interior minister, he is directly responsible for the extra-judicial killings of MQM workers by police and law enforcement agencies.
"Since the time PPP came in government in Sindh, they started killing our workers."
He alleged that some police officers in plainclothes have been instructed by the government to carry out extra-judicial killings of their activists.
"The PPP has given us the message that if we protest or raise our voice, it will carry out killings of our workers."
He appealed to traders and transporters to support their call for a strike.
The MQM leader warned that if any other worker became victim of an extra-judicial killing then the appeals to their workers to remain patient would go unheeded.

and why not protest in front of the Corruption Minister (CM) House ???
yet again !!!!
Its a peaceful strike and all roads are open and clear - with no signs of violence or forced closures. Kudos to MQM for not following PTI and forcing road closures. I am in my office, but feel sad for the departed soul. RIP!
Two aspects must be kept in mind: One, diversion from the raid of Rangers on CPLC Chief's house; and Two, the upcoming senate elections. Unfortunately, all this is a part of dirty politics in Pakistan.
PTI and it's burger workers need to take a lesson from MQM on how to organize a massive shutdown of the worlds 3rd most populous city within 15 munutes. I do not support MQM strikes, but I give MQM tremendous kudos for being so organized and having such a massive following, and trust me, these strikes are overwhelmingly supported by the Mohajirs and probably 5-10% is shutdown by force.
i am disgusted at most of the anti MQM comments , instead of condeming this henious murdur , MQM is being targeted , how long and how many , when will karacittes b treated as equal citizens
But why do we, the people have to bear the brunt?....the whole city came to a halt...I couldn't reach my own home and had to stay at my friend's place....just because the road had been blocked....what do these shutdowns and mournings actually achieve ?
@Karachite: They lost their political worker and hundreds more!!! What do you care about !? ask the families of the departed ones!! What if the slain was your father or brother?
Couuntry with selective justice and unfair policies never succeeds! Pakistan cannot prosper with discrimination it continues to show towards Karachi. It's pity and unfortunate!
PPP continues to play its dirty politics. MQM has all the right to fight back if it continues to lose its workers. Where are the Rangers and Police when the people continue to get killed??
MQM please let our children live well ..study...and make their career..... MQM Leave this country for ever
So why did the MQM support the PPP-Z for well over 6 years and still do so when required ?
I wish the MQM would just leave Karachi alone.
This could have been one of the top cities of the world.
On one hand MQM yell about killing of its workers and on other hand law enforcing agencies and legal heirs of people killed accuses MQM target killers for killing their near and dear ones.
It has become difficult for the people of Pakistan to determine as who is/are the affected party/parties.
At the beginning every one in Sind loved the creation of a new political party MQM, but now the situation is very different after MQM has been accused umpteen times for killing of journalists, rival political workers, teachers/professors/ doctors.
It seems that who so ever kill any one in Sind, the blame comes on MQM being the third largest political party of Pakistan.
Every one knows that Police is corrupt and kill people who so ever is taken into custody, more particularly MQM workers of Urdu speaking community, but at the same time MQM also does not enjoy good reputation among the people of Sind, as well as in Pakistan, as its workers are known as target killers.
If the Shutdowns are the price of getting rid of Bhatta, Target & Ethnic Killing then we Karachites are happy to pay this price.

infighting!
