GILGIT:

The recently-concluded Technology Transfer and Skills Development in Gems Sector project will significantly change the lives of people in Gilgit and Chitral, said Rupani Foundation (RF) Chief Executive Jalaluddin on Monday.

The project formally ended at a ceremony in Gilgit on Saturday. The ceremony was attended by representatives of PGMA, PGJDC and others.

Implemented by RF, the project managed to set up a state-of-the-art gem testing and certification laboratory at Danyore in Gilgit. A four-member team is testing gems along with appraising and certifying the stones.

Over the years, RF established two gem cutting and polishing production centres: one in Hunza and the other in Chitral. “The trainees can work anywhere in Pakistan now. It will strengthen the sector as these people can now add value to rough gemstones,” Jalaluddin told The Express Tribune.

He said gemstones are plentiful in G-B and Chitral, thus offering an opportunity for Rupani Foundation trainers and trainees to market their products regionally and nationally.
