"I would say this is an insult to the Pakistani people and Pakistani forces if you ask this kind of question. When I say we're very clear and we are capable of dealing with them," said the Director General Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR) in an interview to CNN's Christiane Amanpour.
General Bajwa clarified that the army was taking action against militants ‘without any discrimination.’
“There are no good terrorists. There is no collusion. We are absolutely clear, no confusion in our mind. We are going against all terrorists without any discrimination of hue and colour,” he said.
Bajwa said the army is clear in its aim and they “have to go against the phenomenon of terrorism, against all terrorists, and their abettors.”
Speaking about the military's efforts in combating terrorism, the DG ISPR said, “We have been so effective and we've achieved the desired results. And we are expanding it. We will go to the last terrorist and we will eliminate terrorism totally from our soil.”
“We've already cleared a major part of North Waziristan except for a small belt of area, of terrain, just next to Afghanistan border. There are air and aviation gunship strikes, which are continuing. And there will be ground operation as well,” he added.
Comparing the military’s performance to that of US forces in Iraq and Aghanistan, Bajwa said, “Look at the performance of Pakistani forces, they have done an excellent job.”
Further, he said the attack on Army Public School in Peshawar has united the entire nation, “There is a 'whole of nation' approach. You've seen the entire political leadership take on one table and take certain decisions for the future of our country.”
Expressing gratitude to the international community for showing solidarity during the time, DG ISPR said, “This is a fight which is against an enemy who is focused and who is very clear that the whole world is their enemy. So we, the whole world, need to come together, join our hands and fight this common enemy with common resources and with common narrative.”
The military spokesperson also said that "it is very difficult to guarantee that nothing of this kind happens anywhere in the world. We just saw what happened in Paris. We have seen school shootouts in places like America.”
Amanpour went on to talk about the consequences of the Peshawar attack, including the government's decision to lift a ban on executions.
"There is always a chance of blowback (of these executions). So now that the military has been mandated, it has a sunset clause for two years. But there is also a criminal justice reform which is underway," Bajwa said.
Responding to a question regarding the establishment of military courts in the wake of the attack, Bajwa said, “[Military courts are] a stopgap arrangement which has now been given to the military for a period of two years while the criminal justice system is under reform.”
Commenting on relations between Afghanistan and Pakistan, the spokesperson said, “I would say this has given a huge fillip to the relations. But the relations were already on a positive trajectory, especially ever since we had a new government in Afghanistan.”

@Khilji: Yeah the same Paki Army led till recently by te brave and courageous Gen Kayani ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ famous for his indecisiveness, inaction and chain smoking. What do u say?
@Azi: Well said . You are Our Pak Star.
Any example of this much-touted "capability"?
We are with the armed forces of Pak. But we want a final result of war against the jihadist.
Dear ET, I have written many comments without any appearing here! Any problem?
@AVMPolpot: Hi Polpot, Pakistan has moved on since since 1971. But not without learning one or two lessons and strengthening itself for any future combat against the enemy who had trained infilteraters, out numbering Pak army fighting a revolt 1000 miles away from west Pakistan. It was a difficult but a sensible decision for Pak soldiers to lay down weapons - remember even with limited supplies left there would be thousands more, including Indian soldiers, who will die uselessly before it all came to an end.
I am sure India has also learnt an unforgetable lesson and is continuing to bleed ever since. Not only that but Indian army infiltration into East Pakistan has forced Pakistan to acquire a formidable power so that India has been on the run in an attempt to avoid its annihilation. It knows any miscalculation could result in immeasurable damage. All it can now do is to beg international sympathy by playing victim and making up stories of its beheaded soldiers.
Mr Polpot you fail to recognize you can not free yourself from the Pak trap you have fallen into...and that despite having 8 times more resources than us. We have no intention to stop you from your chronic haemorrhage, a punishment for your wicked rulers.for conspiring to split Pakistan.
BTW I donot want to remind you of 1962 but what you think of the humiliation suffered by your army & nation? That was just one front then---you are now surrounded by the Chinese and will have nowhere to withdraw and hide! America getting increasingly weaker you won't have many friends coming to your help. And given your conduct you have already nearly alienated Russia. So be prepared.
@AVMPolpot: Yeah Polpot...The very same Indian army that surrendered before every Afghan, Turkic, and Persian army in the past. Same bloodline, more or less. You and your co-trolls seem to like the past. Thought I should give y'all a trip farther back. You're welcome.
We spend so much of our GDP on the armed forces but thus far have never won a war - so please do not question our right to question you! It was the Army under Gen Mullah Zia Ul Haq that pimped us out to fight the soviets and introduce the current Klashnikov culture , it was the army that introduced the failed idea of strategic depth , it was the army that invented good Taliban and bad Taliban but now the chickens have home home to roost
@nomi: When your brave Army first denied that those fighting and dying in Kargil were their soldiers and refused to take the dead bodies of those who died whereas whole world knows they were regular soldiers of Northern light Infantary even then we pray for thesuccess of PAKISTAN A rmy in the present operation.
May be there are few hafiz saeeds in Pakistan but I can see a lot of them in India. Being an international student I have many indian friends, they always show no reaction or normally end up saying that "hum bhai hain" (we r brothers). I really appreciate that but I have seen few of them (my indian friends) commenting hatred and rubbish on social media against Pakistan. I am sure there are few of them living in Pakistan but they are not many in numbers, we say the same thing in front and at the back. Instead of commenting here talk to me or some1 Pakistani face to face.
@Haroon:
I respectfully disagree with you.
CNN and many other US Channels have made a mockery of Pakistan's sacrifices. It is not unprofessional to warn someone when they are determined to insult and provoke you. If you have watched his complete interview like I have you will agree with me that he spoke the facts and the truth and did it very wisely. At least he spoke more eloquently then any of the civilian leader would have spoken defending Pakistan with exception of perhaps Imran Khan. And no I am not a part of PTI.
@AVMPolpot:
Yes indeed that is true. however do not forget that was caused only because of wrong decisions of the civilian government and traitors at that time.
Fast forward it to today and you will not want to mess with the brave Pakistan Army of today.
@Jugni:
If you are implying that that it was the weakness of the army then you are incorrect. Pakistan Army is fighting a war with and enemy which barbarous in every respect.
Inshallah the current team of generals and commanders will soon show you and the World how strong, capable and determined they are for the defence of Pakistan.
Please do not forget the top commander of these brave generals is a brother of Nishan-e Haider. Generals like Raheel Sharif are not born every day. Pakistan is blessed to have the top brass of such caliber today.
" Speaking about the military’s efforts in combating terrorism, the DG ISPR said, “We have been so effective and we’ve achieved the desired results." ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Reminds me of the Headlines in Dawn , on the day 90000 Paki soldiers surrendered to Indian forces: "SUCCESS IS CERTAIN".
How many Foreign Ministers does Pakistan hv? ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ The article makes me wonder! And does any one in Pakistan realise what kind of image it projects when an Army guy speaks for Pakistan on non military affairs on international media?
The ET Moderator is a Coward ++++++++++++++++++++ I hv recd the following responses to my posting here: Zubair: “we will take this war oi indian soil in nuclear war form…so better indian stop.” Peer : “I think you forgot that the Muslim rules on you for more than 1000 years.” Nomi: “Pak army has power of Emaan. which u ppl dnt have.” Ali Hussain : “Yes the same army who taught indians a good lesson in 1965.” Shafiq: “I think u are an indian.”
i attempted to respond to each one above but the Moderators didnt approve of my responses. What does that show? It shows the shallowness of Paki thinking and that the Moderator is a coward. Exactly the same value demonstrated by Bajwa when asked a qn by Amanpour. So guys think and come to your own conclusions.
General Bajwa your reaction to a valid and rightfully appropriate question is of a person who is suffering from an acute form of inferiority complex. I come from an army family with a long history in the service of arms. I am quite aware of our army's strengths and weaknesses. At this critical juncture as most of us know that there is a longways to go before we can call it a success and the mission accomplished.
@AVMPolpot: Get your facts straight it was 28K, read what Gen. Sam Manekshaw wrote in his book. Besides Pak Army was surrounded by all sides and had no supplies. The Gen said they fought bravely. The real humiliation is on Indian Army for failing in Kargil war despite having 1:10 advantage.
AVMPolpotd: For rest of the world it was -Russians are coming. For Indians however it's - Pak army is coming..hush...go to bed.
The proof is in the pudding.
The question is ligit, as history is not with Mr. Bajwa's employer. What do Mr. Bajwa and his fellow employees know about the word "insult', they have a league of there own while the others rot in the land of pure.
Hats off to Pak Army,Generals Sharif and Bajwa.
@US CENTCOM:
Please don't waste American taxpayer paid salary on browsing the forum and posting meaningless platitudes. Pentagon is wasting precious tax dollars on useless exercise.
@MUSTAJAB-UR-RAB KHAN: The Afghan Russian fight was always a proxy fight between US and Russia not a direct fight. They chose Pakistan as an agent to prop up the Mujahideen while they could watch safely from outside. Like most agents Pakistan charged and got paid for its services. So Mr Khan your presumptions are incorrect. Your armed forces cannot light a candle to the US or Russian armed forces. You cannot be of mutch help in a direct war. Cool down
Whether or not he considered it an insult he should not have lashed out like this, it is unprofessional to lose your composure no?
@AVMPolpot: I think u are an indian. The military included 40,00 troops rest were not the hard core fighters.Indians supported enemies of Pakistan and political / regional dynamics went against Pakistan. It was not the defeat of Army alone, it was a loss for the nation and an unfortunate event in the histry of Pakistan. And India fought a proxy war. If you are an Indian, I do not intend to explain any further. If you are a Pakistani, I would like you to realize that our military spokesman was giving an interview to an American channel, who is known to be pretty hostile to Pakistan most of the time. You must understand that when you are on an international forum, you are representing a cause, an institution but beyond that, a nation. You must realize that you do not have to distance your self from Pakistan Army. Its not some thing to hate.It has people from all aspects of Pakistans society. It has rich histry, it has values.Support it and critisize in a positive way.Its the positive critisizm which is taken, always.
@Shariq: shariq sahab, our institution are accountable to our people, not American media.
Indians trolls all over the having a hay day all over the net over this news item. Yes, ISAF and American forces combined could not do what Pak Army has done in last 6 months. And don't forget, it was Pakistan and its Army's superb planning and support to Mujahideen that drove the Russians out of Afghanistan.
No one can deny that Pakistan has been plagued by the menace of terrorism for a long time now. A vast majority of Pakistanis rate terrorists as the biggest enemy. It is encouraging to see Pakistani leadership call out all enemies without discrimination and the proof is in the pudding. We see the terrorists on the run since Zarb-e-Azb started. We support and stand with the People of Pakistan as they tackle this menace of terrorism to bring about sustained peace in their country particularly and the region at large.
Abdul Quddus DET - U.S. Central Command
Islamic terrorist in Pakistan is at least 35 year old. And it has only grown and strengthen with time. Furthermore, Pakistan establishment was clear in differentiating between good and bad terrorists till recently. So, it is fair to ask if army can eliminate all terrorist indiscriminately.
This is a straightforward question that is constantly been asked in Pakistani media. Mr. Bajwa lost his cool when asked a straightforward question. He should have been prepared with a detail answer that showcase the intent and capability of the army to handle this situation.
It shows that he is not capable to handle spokesperson's job.
Pak army is our proud.we luv pak army.pak army zindabad
Amanpour - US has spent over 3 trillion dollars on war in Afganistan and yet they control only 2 cities Kabul and Kandahar. It can be argued that your question is valid but shouldn't you be asking this to US Army Cheif NATO Chief rather than Pakistani Army. This implies that you and your media group is seeking every oppurtunity to undermine Pakistan's efforts. No doubt Pak army has done an excellent job in its fight considering resources and economic health of Pakistan
Express Tribune Comments section has been captured by Indians with fake accounts who continuously defame Pakistan and its institutions. Surprisingly Express Tribune publishes most stupid and irrelevant comments while ignore most from Pakistani readers.
The woman can't even dare raise an eyebrow in front of an Israeli politician or general no matter how many children they butcher in Gaza
Kudos to Amanpour - it's a legitimate question that deserves a more honest answer than she got. . It's clear to the outside World that Pakistan hasn't made the tough decision to go after all terrorist and their sympathizers - that includes those within the military. Lets not forget that nobody has lifted a finger to catch those who helped OBL, the Imam of the Red Mosque still spouts his hatred, and nobody seems to have the guts to take on the religious parties.
@AVMPolpot: they surrendered to save innocent ppl and to save more lives and more destruction. they surrendered bcz of dirty politics played by india and in east pakistan. else we all knw n its very clear that if indian army all alone come f2f with Pak army they even cant stand in front of us.... we saw this in Kargil.... where again political govt agreed to step back on pressure of USA. so keep in mind..... Pak army has power of Emaan. which u ppl dnt have.
@Shariq: did u ever ask abt ur tax money frm the elected govt? bcz whenever we talk abt army ppl like u asked for their tax money but none of the shaheed soldiers asked u ppl abt the blood and their lives they sacrificed for us.
A lot of Indians trolls using fake names to comment!!
Dear Amanpour, plz ask the U.S. army why it failed in Veitnam? Where they good enough to root out Terrorist in Iraq and now in Afghanistan? And for Pakistan obsessed Indians plz go away don't waste your time here deal with your own crap. Wether you like it or not, you Indians just cannot stay away from Pakistan. And for those questioning Pak Army capabilities plz don't sit in your lounges commenting on their worth go out in the field and see what they are doing.
No country on earth is devoid of these challenges...the countries like america n uk has also seen such incidents the so called super power....yes army is accountable..but paying taxing doesnt mean u have got the right to own their livrs which they are sacrificing...in battle, every human faces risk...so we are facing right now.
Interesting to see so may Indians here....And just today your minister was suggesting that please stop being obsessed with Pakistan....I personally never visited any indian and i am sure i never will as there are so many important things need to think of...So please Indians try to do something productive rather than just sitting in front of your PC's and arguing people from around the world....And lastly the article and topic i believe Gen Bajwa is spot on and we all know our Army is more than capable and can deal with any kind of situation and we also know they are doing their best....It's a statement of true leader and patriotism
This woman should ask US Army and its allies about their performance in Afghanistan, Iraq and in many other adventures. Bravo Bajwa saab, we trust in you!
Very interesting!! Why should be general upset about such a question. Any generalist has a right to question and also to provoke an interviewee. Had the general was educated sufficiently in generalism, he would stayed cool and logical. He was just required to respond basing on some argument and proved that our army will go after terrorists who may be they are. Additionally, he should have explained, why we had favorites and why we can no more afford them. Such covert wars are not simple and there is no morality involved in it. It is not only that Pakistan had favorites, India, USA and Saudi Arabia too had favorites.
This is a war for the survival of Pakistan and we will muster all power at the disposal of the state to fight it and win it. Our nation is supporting it and our national leadership is on one page.
It is time army should start creating specializations. Ms. Amanpour is a senior generalist with excellent grasp over subjects. She understands what she is asking and also is capable enough to defend her argument and keep stretching the interviewee.
But why General had to come and face her? Is it in his or army,s mandate to talk on strategic issues? What is the role of ISPR? Why this inter-services institution should work under army? It is high time army should look inwards and stop getting ridiculed.
Pakistanis believe in military but it should understand that the nation now needs answers on Taliban and terrorism. If all Taliban are terrorists, then why SSP, LeJ, LeT, Hafiz Saeed are free to move around?
The new Pakistan wants answers from politicians, judges, civil bureaucracy as well as military. No holy cows please!
US, rightly or wrongly believes Army is using some extremists as a tool of foreign policy. Hence the question.
@Peer: Put this question to Mr Hassan Nissar and he will satisfy you.
@Zubair: Dear Zubair Bengalis were your brothers why they sided with enemy there must be some reasons and please do not talk rubish about Nuclear weapons you were at liberty to use the same at the time of Kargil. Only peace is in the interest of both Nations.
Indians are obsessed with Pakistan, even there minister of state admits.
"Northern part of India is obsessed with Pakistan and it is overriding our attitude. We don't need to bring in Pakistan in all dimensions (of governance in India)," Kiren Rijij
I guess same question could be asked with American army top brass. Were they capable of winning in Iraq (answer is NO), were they capable of winning in Afghanistan (answer is NO). A decade and half with their misadventure in both Iraq and Afghanistan, mere humiliation for the Americans. What did they achieve? Wasn't Iraq and Afghanistan much much better before US invasion?
Why are Indians here, commenting on each and every news articles
I have never visited an Indian website, and don't give s##t about them.
Please take your hatred elsewhere.
P.S. The Indian comedians who find this funny can probably answer us why their army couldn't figure out difference between planets and drones for 6 months.
Or the Indian media that is so paranoid that calls pigeons and donkeys spies from Pakistan.
Or calling the previous army chiefs who point out weakness such as Indian ammunition full of duds and not lasting more than 2 days in a war, a coward/ un patriotic.
Or the wife swaps common trait in Indian officers.
Or the poor maintenance crew of submarines that leads to sailors dying.
So much for their professionalism.
ET, your webdesk editorship is in serious peril. You have unnecessary add a useless spin to a composed yet tough interview, granted the Amanpour hold no punches but the Bajwa or any Pakistan will genuinely irritated when question pose like "are you really gonna" or "how can one believe"
You could have a decent headline like this.
"They Can Run but can not hide" defiant Bajwa dismiss questions asked regarding army's capability.
Further, you moderation of comments is sometime very lack luster also.
regards,
@pakistan:
Don't waste your time on Indians. They are born and bred with Pakistan obsession and trying to defame is their only mission in life.
On topic, reporters these days think later and ask first. Another example is fox news. I think a person with average IQ can understand when he said every last one. It might also be a new way of boosting ratings because with increasing population common sense is decreasing.
@AVMPolpot: I think you forgot that the Muslim rules on you for more than 1000 years.
Rather than as an Insult take it as a challenge and eliminate all terrorists.
@Sodomite: You don't have to get all touchy. She deals an even hand.
@AVMPolpot: Show rhe complete picture. The Army surrendered because Bengali pople were siding indian army and it was not possible for pak army kill every bengali hence they surrendered. Indai is again doing the same game through Taliban and we will take this war oi indian soil in nuclear war form...so better indian stop.
Never will u hear an Indian paper trying to diss Indian army but ET, u r the one changing coats!
What side are you ET, for God's sake?
Amanpour spews all kinds of biases. She should be asking the Israeli army or the Indian Army what they were doing killing unarmed civilians and none have been brought to trial??
Firstly, Ms. Amanpour should be reminded from the recent past that it was the talented and capable Pakistan Army and our competent and capable agencies who helped the U.S to win war in Afghanistan against the Russians. The U.S would not have won the war without us. And subsequently, they left us alone in the mid to fight against the militants known as Talibans or terrorists, finally leading to a tragic, horrible and gruesome attack on Army Public School in Peshawar on 16-December-2014; apart from several other attacks, blasts and killings across Pakistan in the last so many years.
Ms. Amanpour, our forces and our brave soldiers fight with passion to achieve martyrdom, whereas, your forces and your soldiers are neither brave nor do they have the passion to fight a war. In fact, you are dependent on technology and media to win the war; e.g. Kuwait and Iraq are the best examples. And more importantly, both, US government and US media misguide their own people and the rest of the World.
Last but not the least, the U.S should stop acting like a policemen for the world; and should stop interfering in the affairs of other countries in the world.
Americans still can't believe they bad they lost in Afghanistan and frequently try to undermine better performing militaries like Pakistan army.
Not insult - blasphemy. Call PEMRA call cable operators, oops they are international media, can't do much can you? Or.... Imran khan will start blaming them for rigging soon, hahah
Fair question by Amanpour and not so intelligent conduct by the DG. Questions about capabilities would arise when the air defenses are asleep during the JSOC raid on Abbottabad and almost no action is taken during the attack by NATO on Salala.
One should enhance the level of tolrence also. Pl Gen Bajwa.
@Jugni: You cannot have military manning each and every school in the country. It was an intelligence failure... yes... but realistically, the terrorists only have to succeed once... In case of Military, they have to succeed all the time...
Shes was right in questioning. The Army is yet to prove any success at all at their job.
why these stupid Americans not questioning from CIA and nato after 11 years of war still taliban has strong hold in Afghanistan, why American army not doing anything against Indian agencies which is directly promoting terrorism in Pakistan, why not taking any action against pak taliban???
Insult to the Army +++++++++++++++++ The very army 90000 soldiers of whom surrendered to the Indian Army in 1971.
Dear Pak Army we are with you every time. You are sacrificing today to save our tomorrow. We as a whole nation salute you.
Long live Pak Army Long live Pakistan
Oops
I guess Mr Bajwa is forgetting who's weakness was in Peshawar tragedy.
