ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has called a meeting of all provincial chief ministers to brief him on progress made in implementing the National Action Plan next week.
According to the official handout, Nawaz called the meeting to get a comprehensive overview on the progress made by the provinces in executing the action plan devised against the terrorists after the December 16 Peshawar school attack.
The premier vowed that the federal government would provide all possible resources to the provincial governments in eliminating terrorism but asked them to be proactive in this important matter.
Govt to clamp down on terror funding
The prime minister on Wednesday also chaired a meeting to review progress on the action plan at the PM House.
He expressed the government’s resolve in eradicating terrorism and extremism from the country, and directed the provincial governments to take proactive measures to ensure speedy and effective implementation of the action plan.
The government would take strict action against those found glorifying terrorism and spreading hatred in any way, added the PM.
Directives were also issued to the Federal Bureau of Revenue to ensure funding to proscribed organisations is stopped.
NAP progress
The meeting was informed that FIRs have been registered against 341 people involved in hate speech, of which 251 have been formally arrested. Forty one shops disseminating hate material have also been closed.
Moreover, action has been taken against nearly 1,100 people on the misuse of loudspeakers.
Madrassas are also being closely monitored so that spread of terrorist ideology can be checked, while 95 banned organisations have been identified in Punjab, which are still engaged in spreading extremism.
The premier directed the Ministry of Information Technology to take steps for blocking websites and social media platforms being used by terrorist outfits.
Nawaz said that a state-of-the-art rapid response force is being formed to meet the challenges posed by terrorism and extremism. “This properly equipped force would be trained on modern lines and given better pay package,” he added.
Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar informed the meeting that 180 miscreants were picked up so far from various parts of Islamabad, whereas 48 of them have been formally arrested.
Similarly, in Punjab, 14,000 suspects were rounded up out of whom 780 formally arrested and are under investigation, added Nisar.
Information Minister Pervaiz Rashid, among others also attended the meeting.
