Murtaza wins national U18 tennis championship

KARACHI: Muzamil Murtaza clinched the Kulsum Saifullah National Tennis Championship Boys’ U18 singles title at the clay courts of the PTS Complex in Islamabad yesterday.

Muzamil, who has also represented Pakistan at the Junior Davis Cup and eliminated former Davis Cupper Hamidul Haq in the men’s singles event, has proven himself as an emerging player in the national circuit.

Muzamil lost the first set to Muhammad Raza Sawani 3-6, but bounced back in the next two, 6-1, 6-4, to seal the win.

In the women’s singles event, former Pakistan number one Sarah Mahboob defeated Sara Mansoor 6-1, 6-4 while unseeded pair Abid Ali and Babar Ali won the men’s doubles title. They defeated Yasir Khan and Shahzad Khan 6-3, 6-3.

Abid has also reached the final of the men’s singles event and will face Shahzad Khan today.

The inaugural Kulsum Saifullah Championship is the opening tournament of the local tennis season, and featured more than 120 players.
