KARACHI: Marina Iqbal’s career-best knock of 69 helped Pakistan beat Sri Lanka by five wickets in the first ICC Women’s Championship ODI played at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium, UAE.

Set a target of 179, Pakistan rode on Marina’s 123-ball 69, an innings that included six boundaries, to successfully reach the target 180-5 with eight balls to spare.

Pakistan got off to a good start in their chase, as Marina and fellow opener Javeria Khan, who made 30 off 68 with three boundaries, put on a solid 68-run opening stand.

But three quick wickets reduced Pakistan to 80-3 as Bismah Maroof made only six while Nain Abidi failed to open her account.

Skipper Sana Mir also got out quickly on just 11, leaving Pakistan on 108-4. Nida Dar then took on the run-scoring responsibility and scored briskly to ensure the win was achieved.

Nida remained unbeaten on 37 off 36 balls while Asmavia Iqbal made an unbeaten 12.

Inoke Ranaweera was the pick of the bowlers for the Sri Lankans, taking three wickets.

Earlier, Pakistan restricted Sri Lanka to 178 for eight after they opted to bat first. Chamari Jayangani top-scored with 49 while Sulani Surangika chipped in with 43.

Skipper Mir and Saida Yousuf claimed two wickets apiece while Sumaiya Siddiqui, Nida and Bismah took a scalp each.
