
An Afghan refugee arrested by Hayatabad police in an extortion case was killed in an encounter in Nasir Bagh after he snatched an AK-47 rifle from the police and tried to escape on Thursday morning.
According to the police, Nabi Gul, an Afghan refugee residing in Tehkal, was arrested by the police on charges of demanding extortion money from a plaza owner. Gul tried to escape when he was being taken to the place where he had stored improvised explosive devices (IED).
“He agreed to reveal the location where he had kept the IEDs used in targeting houses and plazas in Nasir Bagh,” a Hayatabad police office told The Express Tribune. “But when we reached Nasir Bagh, he snatched an AK-47 from our constable and tried to escape, but was killed when police fired in retaliation.”
The official added Gul had demanded Rs5 million from the plaza owner and threatened to bomb his house and kill him.
