The election authorities and the K-P government on Monday resolved a major bottleneck in holding the local government elections in the province and decided to conduct the same without biometric system.
A meeting at the ECP headquarters decided on Monday that polls will be held through the conventional, manual system. Chaired by Chief Election Commissioner Sardar Muhammad Raza, the meeting was attended by Chief Minister Pervaiz Khattak, Local Government Minister, Advocate General and K-P Secretary.
The ECP had opined that if the K-P government would go for biometric machines for the LG polls due since 2009, it will not be possible to hold the elections till the end of this year.
“After detailed discussions regarding various difficulties/aspects including procurement, operational, technical, logistic and security of biometric data in introduction of biometric system, it was decided that it will not be used in the upcoming LG Elections in K-P,” a statement issued after the meeting said.
ECP officials told The Express Tribune that after this decision, K-P can go for polls by the end of April or in early May since all the pre-requisites, including legislation, delimitations and rules are ready for the province.
K-P will be the second province after Balochistan to would hold LG polls.
