The UN chief on Saturday presses on Pakistan to restore a moratorium on the death penalty the government lifted in terror cases following the brutal attack on the Army Public School in Peshawar.
Ban spoke with Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Thursday to express his condolences after the slaughter in Peshawar last week that left 150 people dead, including 134 children.
However, "while fully recognizing the difficult circumstances, the secretary general urged the government of Pakistan to stop the executions of convicts and re-impose the moratorium on the death penalty," Ban's office said in a statement.
Sharif promised that "all legal norms would be respected," the statement added.
Later in the day, a spokesperson of the government in regard to the phone call made by Ban to the premier, said a peaceful Pakistan is in the best interest of the world.
The prime minister ended the six-year moratorium on the death penalty, reinstating it for terrorism-related cases, in the wake of the deadliest terror attack in Pakistani history.

@roma: I think Ms. Roma you should first learn what is Islam and what are the exact meanings of Saheed and this Saheed is only for Muslims.
Salaam As we all know United Nations is not just the name of some country but so many countries sitting together with the reality of cultural, ethical and social differences. By the process witnessed by so many, person like Mr Ban ki Moon is chosen. As we all know this, similarly we know that death sentence is much often in various countries including USA and Mr Ban ki Moon must be well aware of it too. Then why he calls PM of Pakistan and asks to halth death sentences!!? Answer is very simple. Other countries are not getting aids. Our politicians have sold us out long ago. Now people whom we owe they demand things benefiting their ideologies. And if we tried to resist, they have the power to shed blood on massive scale for their money pay back. So i suggest PM should always keep people of Pakistan in mind but also we should tackle the request of a benefactor or i should say try to be what our politicians are good at, hypocrisy but this time in favor of Pakistan,
UN, NATO is itself killing terrorists, AS well as innocent souls in drone attacks. How can they be so blatantly hipocratical.... Nawaz needs to take a strong stance and tell this to their face. They are acting as hipocrats, not democrats.
A hanging a day makes fundo a thinking boy.
It seems Ban k Moon is also party to these terrorists, that is why sympathizing with them.
@Parvez: - giving death penalty is playing straight into their hands - think about it ....these guys are prepared to be shaheed and you are helping them get there faster .
Has UN ever advised Saudi Arabia to stop beheading of people which is much more inhuman than hanging ? Pakistan should continue what it considers best for the security and safety of the people of the country.
I hope now liberals would know how USA & UN are nothing but supporters of terrorism.
I do not agree with UN urging Pak at all. It is Pak's own internal issue to deal with the terrorists as they seem fit. But this does not mean UN or USA is supporting terrorism in Pak. This I presume is a human rights issue. But my take is that these terrorists/murderers are not human. They should be culled. I also hope these opinions are the same for all varieties of terrorists.
By the logic used in the past, UN, Amnesty International etc. must be Taliban sympathizers! Let's call him Taliban Ki-Moon! Why can't we just learn to accommodate divergent opinions on an issue without losing our tops....
Ban Ki Moon, why don't you just mind your own business and go back to being useless at the UN. These terrorists are not human beings. If you think they are human beings, ban Ki moon should import them to his country..
Please get the 'modernised and first world countries' like US etc. to stop executions first and maybe we'll reconsider.
Better to dispatch these terrorist to UN headquarters so Mr. Moon can play golf with them.
Where are all the active Indians on this forum now? Now please condemn this act of UN.
if the Pakistani Govt cant give assurance about the hanging of innocent people. It should not kill anyone.
Any luck with shutting down
All of the participants in this discussion, please cool their mind, and list the countries who are supporting capital punishment, your will see America is on the top. what does it mean by.It means, An insurgency should remain their in Pakistan and Afgannistan, which are a big market of arms. This is very easy to say for capital punishment but very difficult to think an other way to snub this evil.please note, All of the nurseries of these brutal s are still there and will remain untouch. The.The Govt is so impotent that it cant even arrest the the molvi abdul yazeed. The Govt knows, the constitution of our homeland is purely religious, the texture of the pakistani society is purely religious. The Govt dare not to promote the secular thinking, which is the way of salvation. So, Please handle this issue strategically not emotionally.
Only the weak listen to the UN.
He didnt contact us when kids beheaded but he has soft corner for terrorists
this shows the interest of West! they do not want end of terror in Pakistan as this is great game being played by them. Surely Executions will result positive and would be best teaching for further ppl.
Mr. Ban where were you when Israel was killing thousands of Palestinians and did you see recent killings in India?
Tell him to go and fly a kite
Tell him to have it stopped in Texas in any case or situation.
What has UN done to help Pakistan fight Sectarianism? - Zero Zilch Nada - So tell him to shut up.
If Nawaz Sharif listens to others and does what the Saudis and the UN want done, the Army would take care of the situation and will do what it must to protect Pakistan.
What's wrong with the Western world and UN that they are opposing death sentences whereas in various countries even in China and India terrorists/murderers are being given death sentences and UNO is silent but on the death sentences in Pakistan UNO is saying for halt. Why?Pakistan has never to be pressurized by any countries which are opposing death sentences' matters because this is in Pakistan's vast interest and for the security and protection of Pakistan and Pakistani people.....
It is there job to promote welfare, but we need to do what we have to do.
Our Saudi friends frequently chops the head of Pakistani drug dealers - did he bother to say anything to the Saudis? For God's sake let us decide what's good for Pakistan.
This man is overstepping into our sovereignity. He should be politely snubbed. However this is beyond Nawaz because of his dubious credentials.
Come on, there is death penalty in certain states of USA. Why UN not calling them to stop. As pr UN charter each country has the right do their legislation why they interrupting. This is true in Islam as well. All death penalty should be executed in few months regardless whats so ever the nature of case. Blood of little angels has united this nation.
Pakistan Zindabad.
Mr Ki-moon: Please back off. This is our internal matter. No business of the UN or anybody else.
why it doesn't ask US or Saudi Arabia the same!? Dual policies of UN will lead to third world war..officially! (it's underway anyway)
Mr Ban is welcome to jmport these Barbarians and store / flourish them in his country. For Pakistan the priority is to dispose this garbage ASAP.
Hangings are necessary in a country where honour killings and acts of terrorism occur frequently.
In Islamic Law hanging is valid for murderers and and attaining ultimate peace, rather it should be open that all should see it. we should continue with it. World must respect our law. They will see the result if we impose Islamic law.
