KARACHI: Five suspected militants and two gangsters were killed in separate encounters with the law enforcement agencies on Friday and Saturday. Six people have also been arrested during an ongoing crackdown on militants.

Two suspected members of the Tehreek-e-Taliban (TTP) Pakistan were killed in an alleged encounter with police in Mauripur on Saturday. The shootout took place when personnel of the Anti-Extremist Cell (AEC) of the Crime Investigation Department raided a militant hideout near Hawke's Bay Road.

"They resorted to indiscriminate shooting when we raided their hideout," said Ali Raza, incharge of the AEC. "Two of them were killed in retaliation while others fled." He said the slain men belonged to the Khan Zaman Mehsud faction of the TTP. A Kalashnikov rifle and a pistol were recovered from them. The bodies were sent to an Edhi morgue for identification.

Three other suspected TTP militants were killed late on Friday in a shootout with the Rangers near Ghaggar Phatak. Their bodies were too sent to the morgue. In Lyari, law enforcement agencies said they had killed two gangsters, identified as Salman alias Shooter and Tahir. They were shot dead when they had, reportedly, opened fire on the raiding team at Niazi Chowk.

Arrests

Rangers arrested six suspected militants in separate raids in several city areas, including Majeed Colony, SITE and Frontier Colony. A Rangers spokesperson said the arrested men had links with the TTP and that some weapons were recovered from them.

At least 12 Taliban militants have been killed by the Rangers in shootouts in Manghopir, Mauripur and Ghaggar Phatak and two have been killed by the AEC in a crackdown launched after 132 children were killed in a terrorist attack at the Army Public School in Peshawar on Tuesday.

The Rangers say they have also arrested 11 militants during raids at several areas. The CID police have arrested two key members of the Omar Khalid Khorasani group of the TTP since Tuesday.
