ISLAMABAD:
Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC) and the National Centre for Physics (NCP) organised a day-long science exhibition on Saturday for students of public and private schools and colleges.
The exhibition was held for highlighting the Pak-CERN collaboration for opening up new horizons in science and technology for Pakistani scientists and engineers at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN).
NUST, COMSATS, Government College University Lahore, NORI Hospital and National Institute of Vacuum and Technology participated in the exhibition.
PAEC Chairman Dr Ansar Parvez briefed the students about Pakistan’s Associate Membership of the European organisation.
CERN Director General Dr Rolf Heuer held an interactive session with the students about the role of CERN in the development of science for peace in the world. Mission of the organisation, he said, was to know about the origin of the universe and the secrets of the Big Bang, first movements of the existence of the universe.
The DG said that the goal of the research at CERN is related to basic science dealing with the fundamental questions of universe, structure of matter and nature of interaction between various forms of matter.
He said CERN has the largest high energy particle accelerator in the world called the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The DG also discussed Pakistan’s contribution to the organisation.
He said that CERN offers training programmes for scientists, engineers, teachers and students, and summer programmes for the member countries.
Dr Parvez said that there was a need to highlight the scientific work of the PAEC in energy, agriculture, medicines and other areas of research.
