Following the lifting of the moratorium on death sentence, Lahore was put on high alert on Friday, police said.
Heavy police contingents, Elite Force, Muhafiz Force and snipers were stationed at various locations in the city. Pickets were placed on several busy roads. The Quick Response Force held a flag march across the city in 10 vehicles headed by Mujahid Squad SP Zahid Nawaz Marwat. Policemen were also deployed at mosques, markets and important buildings.
Long queues of vehicles were witnessed at Gulberg’s Main Boulevard and Jail Road at around 7pm because of a vigil at Liberty Roundabout. Chief Traffic Officer Tayyab Hafeez Cheema said a ‘zero-route’ was provided to the Kenyan Cricket Team which was travelling from the Gaddafi Stadium to Andaz Restaurant on Fort Road Food Street. He said no car or motorcycle was allowed to travel on the route at the time, he said.
