PESHAWAR: A teenage survivor of Tuesday’s Taliban attack on the Army Public School in Peshawar school described how he played dead after being shot in both legs by insurgents hunting down students to kill.

Militants rampaged through the army-run school in Peshawar and killed at least 130 people, most of them children, in one of the bloodiest ever attacks in Pakistan.

Speaking from his bed in the trauma ward of the city’s Lady Reading Hospital, Shahrukh Khan, 16, said he and his classmates were in a careers guidance session in the school auditorium when four gunmen wearing paramilitary uniforms burst in.

“Someone screamed at us to get down and hide below the desks,” he said, adding that the gunmen shouted “Allahu akbar” (God is greatest) before opening fire.

“Then one of them shouted: ‘There are so many children beneath the benches, go and get them’,” Khan told AFP.

“I saw a pair of big black boots coming towards me, this guy was probably hunting for students hiding beneath the benches.”
Khan said he felt searing pain as he was shot in both his legs just below the knee.

He decided to play dead, adding: “I folded my tie and pushed it into my mouth so that I wouldn’t scream.

“The man with big boots kept on looking for students and pumping bullets into their bodies. I lay as still as I could and closed my eyes, waiting to get shot again.

“My body was shivering. I saw death so close and I will never forget the black boots approaching me — I felt as though it was death that was approaching me.”

The Army Public School is attended by boys and girls from both military and civilian backgrounds.

As his father, a shopkeeper, comforted him in his blood-soaked bed, Khan recalled: “The men left after some time and I stayed there for a few minutes. Then I tried to get up but fell to the ground because of my wounds.

“When I crawled to the next room, it was horrible. I saw the dead body of our office assistant on fire,” he said.

“She was sitting on the chair with blood dripping from her body as she burned.”

It was not immediately clear how the female employee’s body caught fire, though her remains were also later seen by an AFP reporter in a hospital mortuary.

Khan, who said he also saw the body of a soldier who worked at the school, crawled behind a door to hide and then lost conciousness.
“When I woke up I was lying on the hospital bed,” he added.

After this incident, i don’t really mind the CIA torture tactics. That is the only way to teach these so-called Islamists a lesson. They need to teach those tactics to our LEAs too.

This is heartbreaking news. What crimes did these little children commit to deserve such punishment? My thoughts and prayers for the dead, wounded and their families.

But perhaps something can be learned from this tragedy. For years the Pakistani army has supported or turned a blind eye to the terrorists, and now is impotent to do anything to quash these very terrorists who at one time were encouraged to cause turmoil and mischief in neighboring countries, and now for some time are doing the same at home. I guess we reap what we sow.

For how long have we heard that the Pak army is going to clear the terrorists out of these lawless land? And what has come out of it? A few pinpricks inflicted on the terrorists now and then, the army claims victory, and off they go until another round of pinpricks at some later date.

We have a corrupt, incompetent army and security agencies incapable of providing us with protection and security. Just look at how long OBL remained in Pak, and that right within a stones throw of our military bases, supposedly in one of the most secure area of the country. What incompetence!

Until we fix the corrupt security services we will not see much peace for ourselves.

Hamid Karzai, please give me one example of Pakistani army supporting or turning a blind eye to the terrorists. The only reason we have a little security left is because of our brave army soldiers. Have you ever served in Army? Do you even know how many sacrifices our soldiers make everyday just so you could live on living your life in peace?
We have a very corrupt government but our army has never been and Insha Allah will never be corrupt. Taliban have hit us in a place we never imagined them to hit but that does not give you or anyone like you the right to criticize our Army.
It is very sad and devastating to even think of innocent children dying because of wounds inflicted by the cowards who call themselves PTT. But this is a time to stand united, not to point fingers.

Well done young one! That was a brave thing to do and many wouldn’t be able to do what you achieved. Bad people are everywhere and I’m sorry for what you have to go through. For these people were not bad, they were demons sent by the Devil. They had a motive, a job, that does not mean that everyone is like that. May Allah bless all those innocents and their families who got affected by this massacre and may Allah guide His people during these tough times. Amen. Take a bow, my little hero.

Sorry it may sound racist but when it comes to saving my countrymen and their childrens’ lives then im for it! Follow the Ariel Sharon formula build a wall around tribal ghettos like Sohrab Goth, Kunwari Colony etc like in Karachi with one entry and exit point. Build a wall around FATA separating it from settled area with one entry and exit point. I assure you segregating these old timer tribals will save many many innocent lives. So if these tribals want dark ages then send them there by either annihilating them or keeping them padlocked in a ghetto. With that even crime rate in Karachi will largely diminish. These tribals dont pay any taxes and over that are taking innocent lives harboring barbarians or cockroaches from around the world! Ariel Sharon formula worked for them Israel after building of wall has rarely received any attacks of suicide attacks. Im gutted at what has happened today! My heart cries for APS Peshawar!

i am my self an army officer ,you are wrong army is equally corrupt as gov as maximum of army officers are involved in diesel selling and using army diesel in there house generators and soo much more, yes this shouldnt have happened as these children were innocent like those children of fata who got killed in drone attacks and artillary fires and there number is in thousands, today these innocent heavenly children payed the price of that this price shouldnt have been taken from these children but should have been taken from the brigaderes and generals of army and american forces,if my child is killed then definaytely i will my self take revenge one day.there is no full col or brig in army who gets electricity bill more than 2000 rs per month, you can check in all cants of pakistan .sub sai ziyada bijli army officers chori kurtay hain.those who are fighting in waziristan are jawans and not these shitty army officers of pakistan army

@malik: You are either confused or just disturbed. Whether some officers are or not involved in diesel or electricity theft has nothing to do with cowards killing children. Nothing justifies killing innocent children and women. The TTP cowards may think it is brave to shoot little boys and girls but they have only strengthened the resolve of people to see them served justice. I am sure the Pakistani military will continue to make them cry on the run. The time now is to deport all foreigners in KPK, especially Arabs and Uzbeks, illegal Afghan refugees and all Indian agents.Build a wall to keep out criminals from Afghanistan once and for all.

Anyway soon Pakistan will be free & clean from Taliban. We don’t want to see them any more & we need world help to over come at this serious issue. Hope all with us. Pakistan is victim of Taliban more than other country. We are suffering a lot. We need moral & financial help. I believe Obama speech he said in India last time strong Pakistan is , strong region. It seems that Pakistanis are not realising that they are in a state of war. There is an operation under-way, full throttle in the tribal areas. This is war. The army has successfully been punishing these beasts. This is their retaliation. Nawaz Sharif is absolutely right when he says that attacks were expected. This is also a serious lapse on the part of the pakistani intelligence agencies, which yet again, have been caught napping. It’s time for the Pakistani army to respond now.

A listener asks Pashtun leaders at @voadeewa: Don’t condemn attack ask Punjab why Taliban don’t attack in Punjab and kill Pashtuns only.

  • Dec 16, 2014 - 11:21PM

My hearts go out to the people of Pakistan, especially to the families of the murdered children. I cannot imagine the agony of those mothers and fathers. I was in Pakistan for most of 2013 and a few months in 2014, and I came to love the country and admire the spirit of the people who carry on, trying to raise their families and lead honorable lives with love, in the face of circumstances that we in the comfortable West cannot even imagine. This rampage in Peshawar forces all people of goodwill to confront the painful reality–that evil exists in our world. Some acts, such as the cold-blooded murder of one child, let alone 100 of them!, have no explanation from the human realm. Nothing–no political grievance, no “root causes” of material deprivation, nothing–accounts for such actions except evil. May justice be served. May the souls of the departed find eternal peace and may light perpetual shine upon them.

I can admit on the internet that I actually had tears in my eyes when I saw wailing mothers and weeping fathers. Then I read stories of these kids and it saddened me even more; then that sadness went beyond the incident and I asked myself this question: when will some leader man up and declare Taliban a terrorist organization and that would include any affiliation with them? This would actually be in the realm of “concrete measures” rather than condemnation. There’s a mullah who sits in this “lal masjid” and preaches hate and supports the Taliban, why isn’t that lunatic being prosecuted for sedition? Why isn’t Taseer’s killer being hanged? And then a damning reality hits me and it is our nations reality that there is a lot of support for these savages within our society. Think beyond the 7 savages who carried out this attack and then it hits you: they had a lot of logistical support, they had guys who surveyed that area etc etc. This savagery is among us.

This is a shame. They haven’t just killed 130 children but all of them psychologically. In an age when their personalities are architecting, they experienced this trauma. The survivals are just lucky to get a chance to live more yet some wont actually LIVE again. They just don’t need physical treatment but they need counselling and proper psychological support. If anyone in authority gets a chance to read this please give them psychological support to come out of this trauma and to make it a bad memory not a bad life to live.

We are sorry that you had to suffer these injuries and to undergo this trauma; we are sorry that a lot of your friends had to experience similar pains and injuries and we are ashamed that we could not save your school fellows from the clutches of such brutal deaths. Forgive us my child for we as a nation have lost our sense of unity and strength of faith.

I have no words to describe the pain i felt when i heard the news. The only thing going on in my mind again and again Was that this could be me… This could be my own blood, my brother or my sister. You never get emotional when something like this happens far away from You.

Even though i live i Oslo, i feel like i have never been more united with my pakistani brothers and sisters. I pray that my mothers can sleep at night and my fathers dont have agony in their hearts. I pray for the little souls who where taken away from us too soon. We need to take care of eachother.

Which religion supports the murder of innocent children? Which religion supports vengeance killing? Murderers who kill in the name of religion and conviniently hide their faces are the biggest cowards and zaleems if the world. They belong to no country no race no religion. They are the filth of the world and of the humanity. Let us pray that no more innocent lives are gambled in course if such depravity.

I am a mother of three kids. Two of them go to school. When I heard the news, I couldn’t make myself turn the tv on. When finally my husband turned it on, it was tears, heartache, fear and hopelessness for me. Since then, I am just crying and just thinking ways to deal with anyone who attacks my home. What will I do then? Where will I hide the kids? How will I keep my 10 month old quiet so the attackers dont hear him? And so on… because that is what I am expecting n fearing now. Man made houses to stay safe from animals and natural clamities. Where should we go to keep ourselves safe from man? I am scared! I am horrified! I am feeling so very helpless!

I request now to the world community that they were crying on world trade center and immediately took actions, in the same way they have to rise again and say stop to Taliban-No More at all. Let us do it all together without any difference of race, color and religion. This is our world and the world of our children not the world of terrorists.

I’m a Hindu by birth but free thinker by choice. I dont believe in religion because it only splits people up. (This is my personal opinion, no offends to anybody) I belive in the presence of God, just one supreme power called God. He will protect us all and change the ones that are off in the wrong direction. God bless us humans. Stay brave and keep believing. Never lose hope and faith in God, as for hope and faith are the positive charges that heals broken hearts and keeps humanity alive.

We always think that nothing bad can happen to us, it is always the other person. This terrible act has proven that every person, no matter their age, sex, gender, religion, rich or poor is almost as equally vulnerable as the other in this world.
I think every nation should be warned and trained to be vigilant and to do the right thing in the right way at times like these. The government is trying but we too are responsible for our lives and our dear ones and must do our best to get out of a tragic situation such as this, like this smart, young boy has done.
It must have taken unbelievable courage and forbearance on his part. Salutes to him and my condolences to the families of the diseased.

Condemning the acts of Brutality in Peshawar where I spent a beautiful childhood. 1.Let us all decide to minimise our needs to the basic necessities enough to survive. This will reduce corruption.

2 Our forces will focus more then on what their goals are.
    3. Let us not blame others for what we ourselves have or have not been doing.
4.All people in this nation deserve to be heard, so give a patient hearing, solve their problem. If my shoe hurts only I know where it does..
5.All humans and animals have rights
My heart goes out to the ones who lost their children and also to the ones who committed the crime.WHY WAS THERE THE NEED TO DO WHAT WAS DONE.??

V K Singh : Pakistanis and Indians have same blood, same lineage, same culture and traditions. Never did all schools of India cried the way it cried on 17 Dec 2014 for all beautiful, innocent, smart, cheerful students of Army Public School who had millions of dreams in their eyes. May God/Allah give solace and comfort to the parents, grand parents and all relatives of children who sacrificed their lives in the safe compounds of Army Public School, Peshawar. I love and like all Army Schools whether they are in Pakistan or India. Furthermore, I shed a million tears before TV here in India on 17 Dec 2014. May there be peace between India & Pakistan.
