This would help ensure a smooth flow of traffic and improve road safety, said an official from a committee that Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif had formed to suggest traffic reforms.
“Such lanes will help reduce the number of accidents. Many accidents occur when motorcyclists try to overtake others,” the official said requesting anonymity.
He said bikers would be restricted to the left lane; lane dividers would be used for the purpose.
The pilot project will be launched on Jail Road, The Mall, Maulana Shaukat Ali Road and Multan Road. It would be later extended to other cities, the official said.
He said that initially traffic wardens would be deployed to educate bikers about the lane. He said the Special Monitoring Unit (SMU) had conceived the idea.
A committee headed by Adviser to Chief Minister Rana Maqbool had taken the SMU, traffic police and the Traffic Engineering and Transport Planning Agency (TEPA), into confidence regarding the proposal, the official said.
It is learnt that the TEPA has been requested to redesign roads accordingly.
SMU officials say the project would be a step towards introducing traffic reforms in line with the chief minister’s vision.
