Afghans have reacted angrily at the handover of key Taliban leader, Latifullah Mehsud, to Pakistan by the United States, describing the act as a violation of Afghanistan’s sovereignty.
The US confirmed the handover of three Pakistani nationals detained at the Bagram air base in Afghanistan on Saturday. The US embassy’s statement had not identified the detainees; however, two Pakistani security officials had confirmed the repatriation of Latifullah.
Latifullah had served as the deputy of the TTP chief Hakimullah Mehsood until his mysterious detention in Afghanistan’s eastern Logar province in October last year. Afghan authorities had later stated that the US Special Forces whisked away the TTP leader from the Afghan intelligence agents.
