“The federal interior ministry has formally approved the new posts and we will start the induction in the department,” an official requesting not to be named told The Express Tribune.
He said that as soon as all the verification processes are complete the intending candidates would be called for interviews.
“The induction against the vacant posts will be made from all the districts of Gilgit-Baltistan,” said the official.
He added that recruitment will be made on merit and the posts will be advertised.
Gilgit-Baltistan Chief Minister Mehdi Shah had informed Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani during his recent visit to the region of the shortage of personnel in the police department.
The chief minster had requested the prime minister that at least 300 posts should be created in the police department to ease burden on the force and ensure peace in the region.
The Prime Minister directed the Interior Ministry to initiate the process for creating 250 posts in the police department by the end of November.
The officials said that the strength of the G-B police is now around 4,000 which is not enough to maintain law and order in the region.
The personnel of Frontier Constabulary, Rangers and Gilgit-Baltistan Scouts, and Karakoram Scouts are called to assist the police in maintaining law and order in the region as and when required.
