ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif allowed on Tuesday the country’s private sector to import duty-free solar system panels.

According to the PM House, after a report by the Alternative Energy Development Board regarding low manufacturing capacity of solar panels in Pakistan, and recommendations of a committee headed by Finance Minister Ishaq Dar, the premier has approved duty-free import of solar systems/panels by the private sector.

In this regard, the necessary instructions have been given by FBR to all custom collectorates as well.

This move is likely to help reduce the existing power load shedding in the country.

How utterly short sighted. He should be creating incentives for JVs in the PV market so that foreign companies manufacture and assemble in Pakistan to access the 180 million market, thereby developing local knowledge base. Instead Chinese manufactureres will be simply dumping their product on our market.
