WASHINGTON: A 23-year old Pakistani student, Mutahir Rauf, was shot dead in Chicago Friday evening, when two attackers tried to rob him and his brother in the Rogers Park neighbourhood. A Chicago Tribune report, citing a police spokesperson, said the shooting happened during an attempted robbery about 7:50pm a block from Loyola University’s campus. The student’s brother was reportedly not injured. No one was in custody as a result of the shooting by Saturday afternoon. “We are shocked and saddened by the tragic and senseless event that took the life of one of our students,” Jane Neufeld, vice president for student development, said in a statement. “This was a senseless act of violence, and one that has absolutely no place in civil society.” To honour Rauf’s life, the university planned a moment of silence on Saturday night.
