LAHORE: Youth Minister Rana Mashhood said on Thursday that a ceremony would be held on Thursday (today) at the Alhamra Cultural Complex Gaddafi Stadium to mark the International Day of Volunteers.

The event is being organised by the Youth Affairs Department, Bargad, a youth-based volunteer network and the Youth Parliament. 10 volunteers from Bargad will be felicitated at the ceremony and success stories will be showcased.

National Assembly Member (MNA) Hamza Shahbaz will be present at the ceremony.

Mashhood commended the role played by the youth with regard to mobilising relief efforts for the benefit of the internally displaced people (IDPs) of North Waziristan and those affected by the recent floods. He said an enduring culture of volunteerism should be fostered and such initiatives should not be limited to national crises. Mashhood said volunteers had the capacity to transform the youth into responsible citizens.

Bargad executive director Sabiha Shaheen said the society already had certain communitarian systems. She said there was a pressing need to formalise such set ups.

Youth Parliament director Abdul Saboor stressed the need to celebrate people who had devoted their lives to volunteerism. He said forming a network of educational institutions was an effective way of channeling the energy of the youth towards volunteerism.
