Shahbaz Gormani escaped unhurt after gunmen riding motorbikes attacked his residence in Multan late Wednesday.
Gormani had been appointed defence lawyer in the case after gunmen shot dead Rashid Rehman, a defence counsel for Junaid Hafeez in May.
Hafeez, a lecturer at Bahauddin Zakariya University, was accused of making derogatory remarks against the Prophet Mohammed (PBUH) in March last year.
Hafeez was known at the university for his liberal views and the blasphemy case was registered after pressure from right-wing student groups.
"Gunmen riding motorbikes fired indiscriminately outside the residence of Gormani and threw a pamphlet... warning him of serious consequences if he continues to pursue the case," senior police official Muhammad Salim told AFP.
"We are investigating the incident," he added.
Another police official Muhammad Akram confirmed the incident.
Gormani told AFP he survived the incident but demanded that Parliament enact laws to protect lawyers representing people accused of blasphemy.

The " Blasphemy laws" have further divided this deeply divided nation. We still do not know how to deal with this grave mindset problem. Pakistan has thousands of indoctrinated, brainwashed people who are willing to murder. Life in this country has no value. Pakistani's have been indoctrinated with the wrong values, we do not know right from wrong, good from bad, what to do and what not to do. Ours is a skewed, hypocritical, bigoted, intolerant, narrow minded society. We cannot even write and speak freely, the blasphemy laws make sure that intolerance and fear are deeply instilled in the minds of people. We cannot dare even write our own history truthfully, factually. This is the state of the nation.
The government is the only body with the knowledge and the resources to deal with these criminals........the fact that nothing ever happens makes the government culpable.
The blasphemy law is disgusting and ancient law that should not be used in the modern day. It is also highly opinionated with some people who are more strict about Islam will indefinatly punish people for minor offences, while people who are more liberal will let the accused go.
@Jibran: I like the name Show-baz sherif.
Incoming wave of Indian trolls who will bash entire Pakistan on the few radical segments in its society and yet will pretend that their govt doesnt institutionalize racism/their society isnt brimming with racism.
Shahbaz Shareef must go after these banned terrorists organizations in Punjab.Closing eyes will not solve problems.If you have no muscles leave the job.
@Jibran: How's Shahbaz Sharif to blame in this? This is societal and bigger than him; it's about us having gone crazy with religiosity as a people.
who is ruling Pakistan.....gun man and target killers or political party.
@Jibran:
You need to grow up and start seeing things the way they are.
Society must stand & condemn those who commit violence as otherwise they themselves will become victim of it. Whether it is attack on a lawyer, or layers throwing petal on a murder must be condemned. There needs to tolerance, whether religious or political, so that others can breathe as well. If you are not willing to give others a chance then you will not get either.
The vast majority of Pakistanis by now has realised the blasphemy laws have little to no value to us as a society. It is being abused up and down the country by people to settle scores and playing with emotions. In a country of 95% muslims it is not islam that needs such protection but the muslims themselves from these laws.
It is time to eliminate this ridiculous law that protects no one but ruins the lives of many people...
Pakistan needs to abolish the Blasphemy law in all its manifestations immediately and make life sentence mandatory for all that act against it.
That province Punjab again when it comes to blasphemy.
Sharif brothers are the fathers of groups like LeJ and extreme wahabism.
When any lawyer decide to do such a great work in paksitan, he should be given full security.
Let us all get united and correct our society and instill acceptance, tolerance and pluralism in the society or else just cease to be a nation and make it a jungle rule.
Thank you Shobaz Sharif for your "good" governance.
