Karachi operation: More than 19,000 criminals arrested in 450 days

These include 1,311 target killers, 398 militants and 442 extortionists

KARACHI:  There has been a considerable decline in crime in the city due to the ongoing Karachi operation, said IG Sindh Ghulam Hyder Jamali. "The police have not just focused on militancy but also target killings, kidnappings and extortion." He added that this had helped them arrests roughly 19,020 criminals and kill around 640 in encounters and raids.

According to details shared with the participants of the 41st Specialised Training Programme held at the National Police Academy at Central Police Office, nearly 1,311 target killers, 398 militants and 442 extortionists were taken into custody. The IG claimed that the ongoing targeted operation in Karachi was being conducted in coordination with the Rangers.

He said that in 2014, 177 police personnel were killed in Sindh out of which 132 were gunned down in Karachi, 26 in Hyderabad, 10 in Larkana, six in Shaheed Benazirabad, two in Sukkur and one in Mirpurkhas.

The IG also discussed different capacity building measures they will take - these include, intelligence-led policing, counter terrorism initiatives and specialised training courses. The forensics division will be upgraded with its own DNA laboratory. The existing Central Command and Control Center will also be upgraded and around 2,000 surveillance cameras will be installed at 400 locations in the city.
