The last six months have rocked the politics of Pakistan out of its self-induced lethargy. In fact, it would not be wrong to say that more has changed in these months than in the years past. Some threshold has been crossed and once over this line, there is no going back. It is indeed a transformational moment that we are living through.
For all those who helped shape the events of the months past; and for all those who participated in them in one form or the other; let it be known that the edifice of old politics is now slowly crumbling. Yes, it may take a while to collapse in a heap, but the collapse itself is now inevitable.
But what of the collapse of the Sharif premiership? That was the stated goal of Imran Khan, and the target of the entire dharna politics, it seemed. And it is on this one point that the dharna scorecard is being hotly debated.
Herein lies the problem.
The long-term impact of what Khan has achieved through his dharna is clear to everyone except those who don’t want to face up to reality. Khan may have committed various blunders since the August 14 march, and he may have said many things that he should absolutely not have said atop the container, but there is no mistaking the fact that he has succeeded in transforming the way that a very large population of Pakistan now thinks about our country. Khan may not be a brilliant tactician, and he may not be a too-clever-by-half politician, but he has done something that political leaders smarter than him have failed to do: touch a genuine chord with the people. Call him naive, stubborn, hot-headed and detached, but Khan has impacted our politics like no other since Zulfikar Ali Bhutto.
So the long-term impact of the dharna politics is well and truly embellished on our political landscape. But what about the immediate fallout? Would it be fair to say that Khan has failed to secure his stated goal of forcing Sharif’s resignation? Would it be correct to state that Khan has been left isolated and that he has done damage to himself, his party, and his cause by refusing to adapt to a changing situation? In essence, has Khan’s dharna failed in the immediate term?
The answer is yes. And no. Here’s how:
Khan has failed because Sharif has not resigned, and is unlikely to do so any time in the near future. He has failed because he latched himself to an unreasonable demand. He should not have done so. The demand was unreasonable on two counts: first, short of the military throwing Sharif out, there was no constitutional way of forcing him to step down. By pegging the success of the dharna on this one demand, Khan set himself for a fall. Second, even if the military had forced Sharif out — like it seemed imminent on the day of the PTV attack — it would have wrecked the system and Khan would have had to shoulder most of the blame. As long as Khan stays firm on the resignation demand, he will continue to be reminded that he has failed on his one-point agenda.
Khan has also failed because he will at some point need to wrap up the dharna and send the container home. By doing so, he may have to taste a slice of the humble pie. Did he, after all, not say he will sit alone in the container for a year if he has to until Sharif resigns? He has already stepped back a bit from his demand, but the final departure from D-Chowk will require less ambiguous words.
But Khan has had a resounding success in forcing Sharif to realise the requirements of his job: get the work done. Khan has also forced Sharif to understand that power and popularity cannot be taken for granted; and that there is a very large segment of the population that adores Khan and loathes Sharif. That has got to be a rude awakening to someone who is surrounded by cronies and sycophants at most times. Khan has reminded Sharif that he alone can bring out tens of thousands of people for him in different cities; that he commands a popularity few can imagine; and that he has the will, the ability, and the determination to change Pakistan forever.
Now, today, in Islamabad on Jinnah Avenue, has come a defining day. Khan will stand on that container braving the Islamabad chill and looking down on thousands and thousands of people beneath a sea of party flags. He will have their rapt attention, and that of the nation glued to their TV screens this Sunday evening. Khan will hold that mike, scan the crowd, clear his throat — and say…
What will he say only he knows. But what he should say is:
“I stand before you a victorious leader of a victorious party talking to a victorious nation. We have won. Now we shall consolidate our victory to ensure the ultimate and final death of this stinking status quo. We shall now make sure this electoral system is reformed so never ever are elections stolen in Pakistan again. With your support I promise you this reform will be completed in a transparent manner through the parliamentary committee and we shall not compromise till the reformed system is in place for the next elections. We believe this is an illegitimate government, but for the sake of stability, we will work within the system to ensure mid-term elections as soon as the electoral system is reformed. We will finish this dharna here, but our dharna for a new Pakistan will continue across the country. And so shall our struggle to make this a Pakistan that the Quaid-e-Azam would truly be proud of.”

@Humza: lets put pti and imran khan aside please tell me which other party has led Pakistan better after years in government what have they done except destroyed Pakistan there wouldn't be a a rise of pti and imran khan if they were progressing it is because of them pti has seen a rise if pml-n has won fairly than why are they not verified those 4 halkhas none of this would have happened if pml n would have verified those 4 halkhas.
@Masood: There is likely to be some truth to Neha Ansari's allegations. Some evidence is seen in Fahad Hussain’s several previous write-ups and in general in a more favorable reporting by ET of IK and PTI and a not so favorable reporting of the Government, especially barring the last week or so since whence a trend of more balanced reporting is seen to be emerging.
"...so never ever are elections stolen in Pakistan again." Do really have any evidence to show that elections were stolen? Where is your evidence? If you have evidence, show it. If not, you are accusing without evidence like IK. This shows that you have been overwhelmed by Khan's charisma. You should also examine, if IK is being used as a pawn by the establishment and also to what extent the media by being influenced by the establishment? Is IK relenting on PM's resignation because the establishment's support is lessening or is the establishment now guiding him to this stance? Dig deeper.
@aaaaa: Wondering if as per Neha Ansari’s article in FP, ISI & Military is dictating anchors and editors to have a tilt towards IK's narrative, how come Express News been showing recent government sponsored hatred advertisement campaign against IK. Seems Neha Ansari’s article itself is sponsored (by the same sponsors of the hatred campaign!!) and it is in a complete contradiction of actual events and facts since start of movement.
It is a brilliant piece from Fahd. One can not dispute Imran's demand on electoral reforms but his tactics and rhetoric might be put to test. Politics is not one day cricket, its more of a art of negotiation and communication between stakeholders. Both IK and NS is forgetting this very essence of politics. I must admit here IK is different than usual politicians. He does not go by normal rule book of politics, he is heretic, and this is his USP. People adore him because of this unusual view of his politics. Pundits may brand him as naive, crude, raw, unpolished but people are so dissatisfied with status quo politics, IK is the only saviour to them.
The last paragraph is worth considering by the policy makers in PTI. To Mazari I say please pay heed to the last paragraph. People has short memories about politics and it shall pass too, prepare for the long range struggles for the betterment of Pakistan. Once Hafeez Pirzada told me that Z A Bhutto could have transformed and done wonders for the country for best but his success went to his head and he became despotic and ignored advice. The same could be said about IK now, it is time to heed others advice and succeed you will.
"... braving Islamabad chill". Chill at 70 degrees F?
To all PML-N supporters, accept that Khan is a true leader and has the will to change Pakistan. He is standing like a wall for the past more than hundred days. Can Sharif & Co. do the same for even three days? I am sure they will prefer to go to Jeddah rather than staying for three days in the container.
Wishful thinking but miracles do happen
The agony is that it is not the case of a political leader (IK) against rulers and status quo. The painful fact is that it is the case of a leader against criminals with all the resources at their disposal. Everyone knows how to deal with criminals i.e. become one of them or use force etc. But IK's hands are tied since he can not become like one of them and he can not call his supporters to use force and endanger their lives due to his inherent finesse and sophistication. He still believes in getting justice through peaceful means. One may view it as his weakness and failure or his firm belief as his strength. Given the choice, I will go with later since history is a testimony that struggles for true and just causes do not bring fruits overnight. Optimism is the key and change has become inevitable.
He should not end the DHARNA....it has become a symbol, symbols must stand tall. DHARNA has become education, and education must stand tall.
Today's mammoth crowed at Havelian in NS Jalsa is a big slap on pti from people of KPK. oh yes... big slap on pseudo analysts too.
perfect column just at the end what u think he will say he will actually not say it. :D
@F Khan: Read Neha Ansari's article on FP. All will become clear.
What next? Another rally somewhere with same crowd.
Most of the things done by the Government and later shown as a favor on the people are because of Dharna remove the Dharna you remove the stick no more Reforms no more Hope for free and Fair elections next time
The problem is much deeper than what is presented. The democratic system in Pakistan is a sham. The President is APPOINTED by the party in power, the Senators are nominated by parties. Both the President and senators are unelectable people riding on party loyalty. I would be ashamed to be either a nominated President or a nominated Senator. Those accepting these jobs display their lack of moral virtue. I am no fan of IK but in all fairness I have to agree that IK has indeed shown to this nation that statues-quo is no longer acceptable to this nation. We the people demand that those we elect act as our representatives and not as our masters. Thank you IK that you have started something that no other politician never had the courage to do - accountability to the people. We are sick of dynasties in Pakistan be it Bhutto or Sharif.
Godspeed Imran--we are all with you!
I really respect Fahd Hussain for his brilliant writing skills, and would completely agree that Khan sb has indeed succeeded in making a huge segment of the Pakstani population politically aware. Full points there.
But to argue Khan sb is on the verge of shaking the status-quo or has done damage to status-quo is to argue that Pakistan is the land of the clean - just because we've named ourselves that. Apart from a few exceptions like Asad Umar and Arif Alvi - PTI's core ingredients are made of the same filth that all other parties are made off. Sheikh Rashid shares the stage with IK - a man who has been a federal minister 8 times! JKT and SMQ are going to usher in a new dawn for Pakistan?
All that makes PTI different is the head of the party. And he is as self-interested as every other politician in Pakistan. And as far as arguing for justice whilst being a part of the opposition - well PMLN done the same thing, PPP is doing the same thing now and so will every other party for as long as you've not come in power.
Wishful white washing of reality. No matter how you define it, Imran Khan has only shown that he is not fit to lead a national party let alone the government. His increasingly confused speeches laced with vitriol and gutter level accusations, his u turns, his histrionics, his inability to negotiate and his childish exaggerations. He scared many former supporters like me who expected better from an educated man. If anything, Imran Khan is a VIP who acts like he is above the law and exhorts others to break the law. He is not the face of Naya Pakistan but he has surrounded himself by the worst of old Pakistan. He has just welcomed a phoney degree carrying Aijaz Chaudhry who was about to be kicked out of PML N. He is shown will allies like Shaikh Rasheed and the Chaudries of Gujrat who have taught him how to speak and think. Imran Khan has allowed himself to become a pawn of anarchists and anti state elements who don't want to see investment and stability in the country. No one in Pakistan or abroad expects all of Pakistan's problems to be fixed in 1 year or even one term of an elected government. The fact that Nawaz Sharif has done so well in encouraging investment from China, started infrastructure projects and stabilized the currency has already scared Imran Khan and his one man show. The thousands of brainwashed youngsters who show up to party will not deter the majority of Pakistanis who prefer to see an elected PM continue to work for the nation.
If one has to give credit to IK ever, that would be for bringing culture of Immorality to new heights. They are absolutely hopeless people.
IK was played by the establishment to shake up the NS government and make it more pliant to its demands. As soon as that goal was accomplished, IK was left alone. IK should announce today to change his strategy but not the goals. He should quit dharna but must continue peaceful street pressure locally where-ever it is needed. In addition, he must use his power in parliament and its committees with full force to bring facts to the people instead of just claims. He would also have to show some concrete progress in KPK. And he must distance himself from Jamaat! If he is able to do all of this, PTI can become a mainstream party, otherwise he will always be on the fringes. Remember, youth come to support you as fast as they can turn against you.
Unfortunate the ABC educated who think they are the actual intelligent ones while writing such articles forget to touch upon important aspects like the impact which such Imran type politics is having on our youth- the ones who are the future management of the nation.
One lesson Imran Khan will learn from this is that politics is the art of the possible.....and not the impossible. Will Nawaz Sharif learn anything from this....I doubt it. His philosophy is I have another few years at best and I will make the most of it....and the people will suffer. Its Asif Zardari who should realise how wrong policies have marginalised the PPP, and learn some lessons from all this........but here again I doubt it.
@PTI?: Oh what a lousy comment. PTI is doing excellent in kpk if you have doubts please come and see for yourself. Still its pti's first time not like decades of pmln and performance is 1000s times better
Well this way or that, this status quo is dying and we will soon be free. Good job IK we love you
Fahd Hussain analyze & sum up the current situation brilliantly. I think for the sake of Pakistan both PMLN & PTI should step back from their positions, show some flexibility and enter into a meaningful dialogues to end the ongoing impasse. The possible speech for Imran Khan is very well thought out. I hope some one can pass on this piece to Imran Khan and convince him to follow the suggested path.
Please can somebody tell this writer to come out of the PTI euphoria. Khan Sb is on the defensive now compared to 100 days before just because of his single tract approach ' nothing less than PM resignation' and people like Fahad, trying to make a Bhutto out of a lunatic. The best time to negotiate was at the start of the dharna. Just look at the people commenting in the internet and the opinions in the blogs. Khan Sb. is losing ground fast. One more date and he will be left with Sheikh Rasheed and DJ Butt on top of the container.
Years ago many promises and hopes were given to the people of Pakistan generally and KHYBER Pakhtunkhwa specifically. And that why the with the hopes for better situation, education and future then innocent people voted PTI. While after the win of PTI in the KP the PTI has been totally ignored the promises with the KP. Nether the people get better nor the PTI is serious about the Naya Pakistan or Naya Pakhtunkhwa. The ground realities are that the percentage of corruption increases, the Energy crisis get worst day by day, the Drones still operating even in the settled area of Pakistan. The security and killing still continue and the institutions are open for all type of corruption. Even the PTI MPAs and MNAs take fully advantage of bad governance and corruption. The general public having lost their hopes and hence there is more chances increasing terrorism or extremism. The truth is that for PTI the changing of KP is more difficult and challenging than Naya Pakistan. Hence the PTI take help of self created Darhnas to escape or ignore its failure in KP.
writers nice depiction of whole chronological mass awareness movement, after going through writers' draft consider assumptions 1-we the two pronged peoples would let imran to enter parliament again, 2,is is not true that imran s claim of having tussle of status quo and anti-status quo after standing lonely tends to be factual 3-how would it be possible election reforms within parliament, when it did not occur as pressure of gathering culminated earlier,it would never accomplish. beneficiaries are in majority and why would they cut their feet with axe,and u would be meant at that imran would have to again resort a movement, 4 if imran adjourn darhna, pronged peoples would never forgive and if he stay they would continue to jeer at him,
