SUKKUR: Dr Tanveer Abbasi was the poet of beauty and truth, said Shah Abdul Latif University (Salu), Khairpur, social sciences and arts dean Dr Mohammad Yousuf Khushk on Wednesday.

He was presiding over an event at the Dr Tanveer Abbasi Corner at the varsity held to mark the 15th death anniversary of the eminent poet, Abbasi. Poet and scholar Dr Ghulam Nabi Sadayo was the chief guest.

Khushk said that Abbasi’s poetry preaches enlightenment, tolerance and patience. Sadayo paid rich tributes to the late poet and said that he provided a literary environment to the people of Khairpur. “The credit of establishing the Radio Pakistan, the Sachal Academy and the Sachal Yadgar Committee goes to Tanveer Abbasi,” said Sadayo. “He was a great intellectual and scholar.”

Khairpur deputy commissioner Munawar Ali Mithani said that, while preparing for his CSS exams, he studied the work of Abbasi very thoroughly. He was influenced by the personality of Ibne Arbi, Shams Tabriz and Sachal Sarmast, he said.

“Abbasi was against extremism,” he said, adding that poets and philosophers are symbols of reformation and renaissance against extremism.
