PESHAWAR:

Following Monday morning’s gun attack on a polio team in Shabqadar, Charsadda, a high-level emergency meeting was held in the provincial capital to assess the overall security situation in the province.

Senior officials of the police department participated in the meeting which was chaired by Secretary Home Syed Akhtar Ali Shah.

According to sources privy to the meeting, Shah has directed all commissioners, regional police officers, district police officers and special branch officials to reassess the ground situation and further beef up security for polio workers participating in the drive across the province.

“This was a deliberate attempt to malign the country,” the insider quoted Shah as saying at the meeting. He added the participants expressed a strong resolve to continue with the polio drive by further enhancing security for vaccinators.

Moreover, a high-level committee comprising police officials and members of the counter-terrorism department was formed to investigate the shooting incident in Charsadda at the earliest and bring the culprits to task.
