As traditional politics goes into a tailspin, and media cranks up its volume, controlled anarchy seems to have been let loose on this hapless land. News is breaking faster than pious commitments, and analysis pours down on barren minds like acid rain. Talking heads shouting; shouting heads screaming; screaming heads cursing — it’s a circus out there. A cacophony of shrill voices getting louder and louder till your head feels it is ready to explode; decibels rising higher and higher and higher, and then…
Hush.
The sound goes mute. You see faces contorted in anger, heads shaking in delirium, arms flaying wildly and mouths wide open in a soundless scream — but you hear nothing. The circus moves in very slow, very quiet motion on a giant screen in front of you — life in living colour flickering to shades of black and white like silent movies of yore, then reluctantly catching colour again.
You sense nothing is making sense. Pretense rolls out like a thick black fog, enveloping all sense of reality inside its bosom. Delusion unfurls like a giant banner as men and women begin to believe their own lies. Smiling faces walk around with unsmiling eyes, looking not at you, but through you. Words lack conviction. Promises lack commitment. Actions lack determination.
“Oh villain, villain, smiling, damned villain!/ My tables — meet it is I set it down/ That one may smile, and smile, and be a villain” — (“Hamlet”, William Shakespeare)
Who do you believe? What do you believe? Facts shuffle around with amputated legs; information has no knowledge; and people speak with forked tongues. No one sports the courage to say it as it is. Those few who do, do it at their peril.
This, then, is the sorry saga of a land that thirsts for truth. But truth is what it does not get, for our discourse is birthed in a culture of dual rhetoric — one for public consumption and the other for the private. The yawning chasm that separates the two grows wider each day. The sanctimonious drivel that disguises as discussion filters truth like a pollutant and delivers sterile content to famished consumers. They are considered too dumb to know reality and face up to it.
This is a legacy of the paternal state; a holier-than-thou entity that has always held the belief that ‘Daddy knows best’. So decisions made by puny men with grandiose titles are based on reasons never to be shared with the naive and gullible public. Instead, this naive and gullible public is fed a diet of the official truth, disseminated through carefully worded statements that reek of official hypocrisy. This culture has seeped so deep within our fabric, it has almost become second nature to us.
Ah, the delicious wickedness of lying.
True justice in the Model Town massacre? Is that what you expect? Is that what you believe? You really think the government will allow a completely independent Joint Investigation Team to present the true picture of what really happened? Don’t you know how governments work? Don’t you know how those working for the government work? Don’t you realise the limitations of the integrity of the noble officers of the state? Haven’t you figured out they have lots of loyalty and very little spine?
True justice? Hear the lies uttered from official quarters. Hear the words that mean nothing; hear the vows divorced from reality; and hear the hollow sounds of sincerity shorn of any conviction. Now hear these small men, who utter big words in public, spew forth the harsh truth behind closed doors. Behind these doors there is talk of ‘managing’ the inquiry, ‘covering up’ the facts, and ‘manipulating’ the investigation through pliant officers who bow not to their conscience but to the whims and desires of their bosses. Do not say this aloud. Everyone knows this dirty little secret, but …
Hush.
Romans fed the Christians to their lions; we feed them to our furnaces. As the fire crackles and burns on flesh and bone, pious words gush forward like water from a fire truck. Hear the talk of justice and punishment; hear the proclamation of equality, protection and immediate remedial measures; and hear the growls of heavy vehicles driving into Kot Radha Kishan, bearing pompous officials come to buy silence. It was terrible what happened, they say with hollow remorse. But will they legislate away the disease? Will their cowardice allow them to face the truth? Will they for once stop believing their own lies?
Hush.
Yes, when you are bred on lies and fed on lies, it tends to become second nature. Governments lie as a policy, politicians lie as a habit, and we all lie as a proud cultural trait. Or do we? When public pronouncements are so different from private actions, what should we call it? When formal proclamations are so different from personal beliefs, what should we call it? When official declarations are so different from the reality on the ground, what should we call it? Well, I know what we should call it, but…
Hush.
So c’mon everyone, let’s hush up the truth here. Let’s hush up reality; let’s all join hands to hush up our deeply held beliefs and strongly cherished ideals; let’s all hush up our dreams and desires; and let’s all together hush up life.
For there is comfort in silence; there is solace in delicious lies; and there is a certain lightness in the numbing effect of a serene delusion. Let’s all believe what we are told; and swallow what we hear and see. Those words floating in the air, and those sounds serenading the soul; they are all meant to lull you into a stupor that will make you forget all your troubles. Go ahead, live the lie, breathe the lie, sleep the lie. Just don’t tell anyone it’s a lie…
Hush.

HUSHHH ET also seems to be in on the HUSHHHH trend because whenever I post something I feel about very firmly concerning Pakistan, it immediately hushes up my comment.
@ET, Please publish my comments regularly without hushing up.
I don't think flossing is a prevalent South Asian habit, even amongst the elite.
And the 'circus' is also in the barracks. But, hush ... Let me not say more ... in case my comment is not approved.
Let's really talk about the bigger picture Mr Husain.
If there was (total) hush like you make it out, how would your "Hush" write up could get published? No, there is no such hush. All and sundry are trumpeting their grievances and the air is full of complaints and groaning. Lying and dishonesty are social ills and it is not the Government's task to proselytize or is it? Regarding Model Town, tragedy, the Govt. wants a rapprochement with PAT and cannot expose the truth of Qadri's goading that led his followers to challenge the writ of the State by attacking police and firing upon it, the retaliation to which led to murders, which is still unfortunate and condemnable, regardless of who is responsible for the tragedy. But without clear evidence, you seem to put the entire blame on the Government, which only reflects your bias.
In the garb of lamenting about ourselves and about our problems, you just want this Government to be dismantled. That is the whole objective of your exercise, which continues unabated.
The article is beautifully articulated. There is poetry and lyricism in it and it catches the attention of the reader immediately. It flows like running water and reminds one of creative writing and poetry There is sattire and sarcasm, irony and wit. It is correct that we do not stand up against the injustices being meted out to humanity such as honour killing, massacres, inflation, corruption and a million other issues. However, the artiicle is so meticulous and rhythmic that one almost misses the point it is trying to make. So beautifully it is expressed!
Tendentious article.
I don't know what to think of this piece, it is heart wrenching but beautiful. It forces us to look inside our souls, we proclaim to be Muslims but never follow the teachings, as a matter of fact could not understand the teachings. Personally I don't think the Sharif brothers could get away with Model Town massacre, eventually they will be answerable in the court of law unless they move on to greener pastures abroad. Sitting so far away, I wonder what has happened to my birth place Pakistan, I grew up in the 50s in Mardan and we did not put Christians and other minorities in the furnace, I remember Ahmadis had their own mosque and Christians their churches, we were friends and some of our teachers were very learned and kind teachers. Fahd, your words do move emotions and very thought provoking, don't ever give up writing, these are powerful words and emotions. Thank you for serving the nation.
@wb: You forgot to mention the plight of Ahmadis in Pakistan. Some women and children were burnt alive along with many houses belonging the this sect.
@Sarah Rehman: "We have lost faith in our leaders with their blatant lives, have played havoc with our lives." You are again finding a person to blame. Even if his party replaced 5 years later you will again complain of other person. A county's foundation should based on truth. Education is is everything. It's the base of removing ignorance. Unfortunately pakistan's education history is based on lies, to boost pride, blame others. A bigoted view and jingoism culture develops against the world from it. And such people grow and then take on jobs with such mindset in judciary, army etc what do you expect? Then you have media on tv who learn from same system building on conspiracy theories, malicious campaign, based on unknown persons books than on facts and world. Such biased environment breeds same type of people and politicians. Who eat money as they lack powers to run country and maintain status quo. As the powerful people behind want it that way. If india had lied in our books we won against China to boost pride. We wouldn't have learned from our mistake.. Nor do we hide our problems or brush under carpet. We learn it and it's taught to fight back and solve all ills in society. And so we always have unbiased good leaders, judiciary, media, civil society from good system that fought back and punished rots in system when proven guilty. The rot is thrown away before it rots instittutions. No conspiracy theories, lies etc work here only proofs and facts does. You need to start from education.
Lie, Lie,Lie we speak lie from top to bottom even with friends, in our families above all in official gathering we meet cheat and eat but what you have written strangely not a lie.Keep going.

Fahad Sb...great but at the same time we all should die of shame...we ourselves lie every minute, every day...let all put their right hand across the heart & claim...we did not lie today ? I can bet my life...not one will pass, so hush up in this world, but be prepared with answer for the day of judgment. We cannot jut blame only a particular section of people...we are all responsible for the mess we in TODAY. We lie, our children lie!
The Hush article, simply beautiful. Took me back to my old English classes in College. The message is good and to the point. I say Zabardast. But does anyone care?
The author also needs to understand that there are good lies and bad lies in Pakistan.
A bad lie is something that Pakistanis don't tolerate. A good lie is something even the intellectual (as Hasan Nisar says educated illiterates) tolerate
For example:
1)Pakistani Christians are safe is a bad lie. Pakistanis HIndu girls (even minor ones) convert because they fall in love in Muslim men twice, thrice their age is a good lie.
There are many such good lies and bad lies. If I started listing, it can take a whole page. But you get the idea.
Salman Taseer's crime was that he spoke for the minorities. Who has stood up for him from among the politicians of this country. Give me one name. Anyone, please. You hear the Hush now?
The author of the article is a genious and fast becoming the only living vibrant soul of the people of Pakistan. He refers to Romans who fed the Christians to their lions; but fell short in describing the scenic history of Romans. Their colosiums in Rome and other towns were built for the circus of human flesh and blood to please the citizens of Roman Empire and to hush them to silence as well, lure them to accept or ignore the atrocities and the carnage which were being committed within and outside the country by Roman legions. Is this not what is occurring in Pakistan today; in KPK and Baluchistan, people being made homeless and displaced living off the aid from foreign countries and by simply calling them terrorists and extremists, receiving the approval and the blessing of the populace as expressed in the media. Who in these circumstances cares about the sufferings of the common irk? What is so different if the minority by coincidece find themselves in the long que made up of majority who are at the receiving end of torture, murder and injustice, and become the collateral accident. Is poverty the reason for a human to withstand inhuman suffering for one or other reason not be able to get out of the abyss or flee in some corner of the great land..

subtle, same very miserable plight in an other tune and texture, people vote for instant benefit, illegal appointments, for accord of illegal quota, for materialistic purposes, to defeat their rivals in thana and kachahri, for illegal allotments of lands, writers facts encapsulated in column is beyond the conscience of the people, plz fahd talk about quantitative temptation, peoples handcuffed in slavery could not be broken because people love it from core of their heart, plz be realistic let these peoples on their own,we the all deserved to be punished, and we love handcuff it is addiction,...
I have to say, the first few paragraphs were quite starkly beautiful in their lyricism. The connection with concrete details in the rest was weak and hyperbolic.
What a true picture of the current political scenario you have presented fahd! It's a pity that we have lost faith in our leaders, who because of their frequent blatant lies, have played havoc with our lives. But now it's not the time to let them get away with their evil tactics and I believe that the Pakistani nation has now woken up and cannot be fooled by them anymore! Change has finally come!
Best Boss. We always feel this at different moments in life. Very well put together in one Column.
....but isn't that what all this kerfuffle that we see happening, about. Its to stop the lies. A sensible person would close his ears and note events taking place and then join the dots.......and so come to a reasoned conclusion.
