LAHORE: A group of lawyers used abusive language for a judicial magistrate and threatened him with dire consequences after he refused to fix the date of a hearing according to the lawyers’ wishes at the Model Town courts on Tuesday. They also beat up the court naib who had tried to pacify the lawyers.

A group of lawyers appeared before Magistrate Nadeem Anwar Chaudhary to plead a case. They requested him to fix the next hearing for after the Punjab Bar Council elections because “they were busy campaigning”. The judge did not entertain their request upon which the lawyers used abusive language for him and threatened him with dire consequences. Court naib Muhammad Imdad tried to pacify the lawyers but they turned on him and beat him up.

The lawyers said they had not thrashed Imdad. They said he had misbehaved with them and they had simply snubbed him.

They also said that they had not been rude to the judge. Imdad said that he had heard raised voices in the court and went to placate the lawyers but they turned on him instead and beat him badly. He said the lawyers had asked the judge to fix a date according to their convenience but he did not do so. “That led to the scuffle... I had nothing to do with it.”

Zameer Jhedu of Lahore Bar Association said that the matter had been resolved in an amicable manner.
