Travelling with a smoker increases cancer risk

NEW YORK: While simply sitting in cars with people who smoke, non-smokers breathe in a host of potentially dangerous compounds that are associated with cancer, heart disease and lung disease, says a new research.

In a small yet significant study, 14 non-smokers sat for one hour in the passenger seat of a parked sport utility vehicle behind a smoker in the driver's seat.

The non-smokers showed elevated levels of butadiene, acrylonitrile, benzene, methylating agents and ethylene oxide (carcinogens and other toxins) in their urine.

This group of toxic chemicals is "thought to be the most important among the thousands in tobacco smoke that cause smoking-related disease", said senior investigator Neal Benowitz, professor at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) in the US.

"This is the first study to measure exposure to these particular chemicals in people exposed to second-hand smoke," Benowitz added.

"This tells us that people, especially children and adults with pre-existing health conditions such as asthma or a history of heart disease, should be protected from second-hand smoke exposure in cars," lead author Gideon St. Helen from UCSF said.

The study appeared in the journal Cancer, Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention.

'SMOKING KILLS' whether travelling with the smoker or having a puff by yourself. It 'Kills', and still we buy. Its like feeling thirsty, go to shop to buy a bottle of water that says "This water has virus, germs, diseases and if you drink it you will die and if you want to buy, you have to pay PKR 150 to pay for your death', will you buy it? definitely we will not. Then why do we even sell cigarettes? why we market it with attractive ads?why we show that a man without a cigarette in his mouth is not a man? why it is not banned by the govt.? simple, because govt. is earning billions out of it.

Well, i do smoke, and the first time when I started smoking, I had the same question in mind that why should I quit it if it is that dangerous, why is it available so openly? why there is no ban by the govt.?

By the way, ,my elder brother quit smoking at the time when ‘STN’/’NTM’ announced that “we will not run any cigarette commercial on our channel as smoking kills and this channel is for youth and we don’t want to kill our generations to come.” Salute!
