While talking to the media in Lala Musa, Kaira said that the Trading Corporation of Pakistan (TCP) was willing to sell sugar to the Punjab government for Rs58 per kg.
However the provincial government declined the offer and TCP then sold the sugar in the market at Rs65 per kg.
Kaira said he hopes that the price of sugar will stabilize once the crushing season starts.
Retail prices of sugar have kept on increasing in the on-going sugar crisis. Many customers in Punjab have complained that despite the directions of the Punjab Government, the district administration could not ensure availability of sugar in general stores at subsidised rates.
Earlier, the Competition Commission of Pakistan (CCP) said that its findings show that sugar barons are fleecing consumers by making cartels at three different tiers.
The Director General (DG) of Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) Waseem Ahmed also said that Interior Minister Rehman Malik has finalised the inquiry on the TCP case, revealing that according to their findings, senior officials are involved.
