PESHAWAR:

To help inmates become productive members of society after their release from prison, the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa home department is considering the initiation of skill development programmes in prisons across the province.

According to officials familiar with the matter, the home department has written to the inspector general (IG) prisons in this regard. The letter, a copy of which is available with The Express Tribune, has sought data pertaining to the qualifications and aptitude of prisoners.

In the letter, the home department has asked the IG prisons which skill development facilities will be feasible to introduce in the province’s prisons. It has also sought information on the facilities currently available.

Moreover, the home department has also approached the provincial industries department for assistance. It has asked the industries department to suggest skill development programmes to initiate in prisons and to also train inmates.

When contacted, the spokesperson for the home department, Qamar Ali , confirmed the programme was on the cards. According to Ali, the department wishes to launch the initiative as soon as possible so inmates released from prisons after completing their sentence can play a vital role in the development of society.
