PESHAWAR:

The bomb disposal unit (BDU) successfully defused a pressure-cooker bomb planted by the roadside in Qadeem Kalay on Sunday.

The device, weighing around eight kilogrammes, had been buried by the roadside in the jurisdiction of Chamkani police station and covered with garbage. Police patrolling the area spotted it and informed the BDU who defused it in time.

AIG Shafqat Malik told The Express Tribune the target of the miscreants was indeed the police. The bomb, said Malik, was a powerful remote-controlled device.

In Ahmad Khel, a mortar shell fired from an unknown direction landed near a house Saturday night, damaging the house slightly. However, there was no loss of life in the blast.

Locals told The Express Tribune the shell went off with a loud bang, causing panic among locals.

In recent days, shells have hit several houses on the border of Fata and the settled territory but none landed inside a settled district.
