LAHORE: A total of 83,557 families were given financial compensation in the first phase of rehabilitation of the flood-affected people that has been completed successfully, Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif said on Sunday.

He was presiding over a meeting that reviewed the arrangements for starting the second phase of compensation to the flood-hit people on Sunday.

“In the second phase, people whose houses or crops were destroyed will be paid compensation on the basis of a survey. People who have lost their livelihoods will also be compensated,” he said.

The Provincial Disaster Management Authority director general briefed the chief minister about the method of payment of financial assistance in the second phase under the Khadim-i-Punjab Imdadi Package-2014.

“A third-party audit will be conducted of the survey done by the Revenue Department. Payment of financial assistance in the second phase will also be made in a transparent and an efficient manner,” he said.

He said that his government had set an example for the rest of the provinces through the payment of the promised financial assistance to the calamity-hit people. “Flood funds are being spent in a transparent manner. The World Bank, the Asian Development Bank and the UNDP have expressed their confidence in the survey conducted about flood losses,” he said.

The chief minister praised the political and administrative teams for completing the survey according to schedule. He also congratulated the public representatives and administrative teams over the expression of confidence by international institutions.
